Part 3: Silver Bells of Joy
Three months had passed, and it was now December 24th, the day before Christmas had finally arrived. For the past three years, Yen Sid had spent it quietly, not wanting to scare or overwhelm the little girl in his home, but now she was eight, and had all the memories of prior christmases, which had been spent in companionship of all sorts of family members. He trusted she would be able to cope, and might even delight in the idea he had planned, so he turned his wizard hat into a red santa hat and gave a silly grin to the mirror, before hearing Percy banging rapidly on a bell he owned, one that sounded like a church bell despite how small it was. That was his cue! He went downstairs, only to see the brooms were sweeping and dancing, having switched on the radio and jiving to Christmas tunes. He gave a smile, and looked about the workshop. With three floors, it would be perfect to put an enormous tree in the wide open space, instead of a little one they kept in the attic. Having a perfectly formed plan, he watched his apprentices come downstairs, Percy doing a midair flip and landing beside him, swiping the christmas hat off his head. “Master Claus, what do you command?” he winked, Yen Sid rolling his eyes and grabbing back his hat. Even on Christmas Eve, Percy was silly as ever. “I trust you have the list ready?” he whispered, Percy nodding eagerly. “I know what everyone wants! Santa will be here tonight!” he giggled, Yen Sid smiling. “Oh, I saw lumen drawing some pictures the other day! She drew all sorts of decorations and a most beautiful tree! I took it when her back was turned, let’s recreate it!” he giggled, Yen Sid looking down at the drawing with an excited twinkle in his eye. Christmas was his favourite time of year as a boy, too. Though Master Grey viewed it as somewhat frivolous, he would tell them a story on Christmas Eve and get them all a present, and half a day off from his teaching. In the morning they’d learn an advanced spell, and in the afternoon they’d visit a tavern, and Yen Sid would seek out an old friend… he almost felt dreamlike, thinking back on those days. He loved to see his apprentices holding the same adoration for Christmas, and he already planned to invite Sonatina now she was a part of the family- she promised to bring christmas cookies! And as the children appeared for breakfast, Golden looked quite sleepy, rubbing her eyes.
“Sleep well, lumen?” Percy worried, considering he was still trying to figure out the extent of her glitching abilities, specifically relating to having dreams about the future, but Golden nodded, giving a tired smile. “Bad dream?” Yen Sid asked, reaching out to stroke her hair, but she shook her head. “No…a nice one. I want to stay there…” she mumbled, putting her head on the table to try and sleep, earning a nudge from the dish that was trying to serve her panettone. Though it was the day before Christmas, she’d had a wonderful dream, and wouldn’t mind sleeping the day away if it meant tomorrow would come faster, as long as she had more happy dreams. She knew they would probably just do what they always did, baking or painting something festive and opening presents, and Yen Sid cooking them a magical feast, but she couldn’t help but feel even a little excited. She turned to see Scout holding Oswald on her back, staggering down the stairs. “Someone get this boy coffee before I drop him!” she squealed, Mickey giggling as a dish practically flew by the brooms to deliver it, startling all seven of them. He downed it and Golden got to eating her food, noticing Percy was smiling to himself about something. “What’s making you smile like a Cheshire Cat?” Julius joked, Percy just giving a slightly wider smile. “Nothing, nothing~. Just enjoying this regular old day.” he giggled, before Golden put her hands on her hips. “Today’s not regular! It’s Christmas Eve day! That makes it special!” she insisted, Percy giving another cheeky giggle. “Ah yes, the day before christmas. And the day when we are going out together to do something fun!” he grinned, everyone turning in surprise at the light man and Yen Sid, who nodded. “Fun?” Golden asked, Percy giving a wide smile at the secret he’d got planned. “Nothing, nothing. Just needing some assistance with something. We’re going into Fioritura today!” he smiled, Golden wondering what they could be up to and becoming a little suspicious. Percy had a twinkle in his eye as he used light to give everyone pieces of paper, Yen Sid beckoning Golden over and the little girl clambering onto his lap. “Oooh, what does it say, Lumen?” Percy giggled, Golden looking down at it. “It says…find a…Christmas tree?!” she looked up in delight, eyes sparkling, and everyone couldn’t help but giggle. “Well I’ll need all hands on deck for this. Everyone, you’ve got your job, so let’s hop to it!” the light man squealed, Oswald rolling his eyes but smirking at the pun. “I can’t wait! Let’s get a tree! Come on!!!” The little girl tugged at Yen Sid’s robes, the old man chuckling slightly and nodding. “Let’s get the perfect tree.” he smiled, holding out his hand to teleport everyone to Fioritura, where they appeared in the centre of town.
The air was full of Christmas cheer from the second the magic wore off. The bells were chiming, carollers were singing, and people were skating and going on sleigh rides all around town. They headed toward the mall area on the far side of town, where there were many shoppers all with the same goal. Splitting off into groups, Oswald had disappeared for a minute, and reappeared with 420 bunny children following close behind, surprising everyone. “Hehe, Ortensia’s running an errand so she asked me to keep an eye on them- hey, stay still!” he groaned, Percy shaking his head with a smile. “Well, get cracking everyone, haha! We’ll meet back here in two hours.” he grinned, Golden taking Yen Sid’s hand and smiling, excitement filling her tiny, sparkling eyes. “With Julius’s help I should be fine, don’t ya worry! But if these kids see Santa then I won’t be shopping for hours- WOAH!” Oswald was dragged into the mall, Julius chasing after him and yelling for him to wait, Scout and Mickey giggling together. “Let’s go Mick, we’ve got a job to do!” Scout grinned, the two walking inside, and Percy zoomed off as a light ball, Yen Sid leading Golden through once the coast was clear, and toward a store selling Christmas trees, trusting her to pick the best one.
“Hey papa, how big should the tree be? I was trying to look it up in my books! The old one used to stay green all year round, was it magic? And oh, I heard so much more! There’s a magic train that comes on Christmas Eve and takes children to see Father Christmas, and that he protects the wonder in children…ohhh I’ve been reading and reading!” she grinned, Yen Sid playfully ruffling her hair. There were so many wonderful stories surrounding Christmas, and it seemed Golden wanted to learn them all. And best of all, she believed in each and every one. He smiled down at her. “Well, the most important lesson you should ever learn about Christmas is to honour it and keep it every year.” he explained, Golden looking up in surprise. “Why’s that? I mean…I already want to do that, but why’s that so important?” she asked, Yen Sid giving a smirk. “Well if you don’t do that, you could get a scaaary future~!” he teased, Golden looking up in childish fright, which amused him. “Uh oh! Guess I’l have to work twice as hard to make Christmas amazing!” she fretted, Yen Sid unable to hide a chuckle at that. They walked amongst the trees, and it amazed Golden how many there were, and how they all towered over her. But all of them were bare, so she turned to Yen Sid. “Do we need lots of tinsel and ornaments and lights for the tree, like in the books?” she asked, but surprisingly, Yen Sid shook his head. “I’ve got an old friend who I can ask for help with that. She’s a little decorator who can make sure the house glistens and gleams with Christmas spirit.” he winked, Golden incredibly curious as to who this little decorator may be. A new friend, perhaps? She couldn’t help but smile, and held onto Yen Sid’s hand as they continued to look for the most perfect tree of all.
Scout and Mickey were in the convenience store, searching high and low for food, just as instructed by Percy. Their list was enormous, so they divided it between them. “Let’s see…turkey crown or ham? Hmm…oh we need carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Cranberry sauce, can’t forget that! And custard for pudding.” she grinned, using magic to gather everything she needed and a broom pushing the shopping cart, playfully saluting. Mickey ran over, grinning. “Scout, lookie!” he cheered, arms full of mince pieces, and Scout clapped, glad there were still some left, and checked it off her list. “Okay…eton mess because Golden is obsessed with it, stuffing’s over here…now we just need…chocolates! They should be over here.” she smiled, guiding the broom and Mickey who followed close behind her. She approached the sweets section, but there was a large crowd, the older girl having to push through and Mickey squeezing after her, the broom trying to find a way in but struggling with the shopping trolley. Nevertheless, they managed to finally get through…only to discover there was only one big box of chocolates left! Worried, they stared at each other, before a plan formed. “You thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’?” they giggled, ready to cause some signature mischief!
Oswald and the kids were in a different area of the mall, looking at homeware and some decorations for the house, just to brighten the place up a bit! Julius saw a group getting ready to sing and pointed. “Hey look, carollers! Ossie, they sound so awesome!” He smiled, bopping his head to their rendition of ‘deck the halls’, before turning and noticing Oswald was a little preoccupied. “Hey Julius, do you think you could grab a wreath over there? I’ll just be a moment.” he said, apologetically, before reaching for one of the bunny children, who had tripped over. “There, there, where’d you fall? Don’t worry, I’ll give it a magical sorcerer kiss better!” he smiled, the large group of bunnies all rushing to comfort the little one that fell. Meanwhile, Julius stared at all the wreaths- there were some that were the usual green, others white, but then he spied the perfect one- it looked like Mickey! He grinned and clapped excitedly, reaching for it. “Ah, it’s perfect!” he cheered, before accidentally stepping on a lightswitch and being entangled in a giant mess of lights, dangling far above and the wreath flopping down onto his nose, the cat trying to free himself but to no avail. “What the heck?! Julius, what are ya doing up there?” Oswald demanded, and Julius only gave a cheeky grin and a coy shrug. “Uhhh…found the Christmas lights?”
Scout ran to the front of the crowd, pulling the broom alongside her, and summoned a set of music cues. “Hey everyone! Wanna see some awesome Christmas magic?” she grinned, the crowd being distracted and entranced by the display of sparkles and shimmers they saw. With every push and flick of her wrist, the broom couldn’t help but dance along, several children joining in and the broom taking turns spinning them around, again and again until it was all dizzy! And by the time they were done, Mickey had snuck the chocolate box away, and gave Scout a thumbs up, the girl grinning. “So, what did you think of that, huh? Merry Christmas!” she cheered, the broom waving goodbye to the children and cheerily skipping back to the shopping cart as everyone clapped for them. But then…they noticed just what Mickey was attempting to put in the cart, and the two looked at the crowd, and then each other, a guilty smile crossing both their faces. “Uhhh…Mick?” Scout giggled, Mickey nodding. “Haha, I think we’d better RUN!!”
Golden and Yen Sid spent a while browsing the trees, Golden pointing at one which looked rather sad and pathetic. “This one’s too…wiggly. And this one’s on the piddlin’ side of puny! But…what about that one?” she mused, pointing up to a grand one that towered far above, even above Yen Sid. He gave a smile, and nodded. “I think that’s a good call. We can send it home to the workshop so it has more than enough space to fit!” he smiled, Golden enthusiastically nodding and taking his hand, the two buying it together. Yen Sid snapped his fingers, and it disappeared in a flurry of sparkles and music notes, landing in the centre of the workshop and surprising the six brooms that were inside, all of them forming a ring and jumping around it in excitement. As for Yen Sid, he’d contact that friend of his later…and then the two heard a familiar shriek, rushing out hastily to the balconies overlooking the lower floor of the mall.
“GUYS!! I got up here as a light ball and I cannot for the life of me get down!!” Percy screeched, Golden starting to laugh when she realised he’d managed to get himself up on one of the massive display ornaments that hung as decorations in the mall. Yen Sid rolled his eyes. “You are worse than my other kids, Percy! You’re thirty!” he sighed, Percy frantically clinging to the support and trying not to be afraid as the ornament gently rocked back and forth with his weight. “THIRTY IS YOUNG!! Too young to die from intense fall damage, master!” he replied, giving his cutest expression in hopes that it would save him, though Yen Sid was just smirking at Golden, who couldn’t stop giggling at the silly light man’s antics. Below, a crowd had begun to form, several people shocked at him. “How on earth did he get up there?!” one woman crowed, and it was followed by another man; “There’s a madman on the ornament!”. Several people asked how he did it, one child even wishing to do that, and Golden had to hang onto the balcony railing as tears of laughter began to spill from her eyes, the little girl cackling at the embarrassment forming on Percy’s face, who had gone as red as her robes. Finally, Yen Sid relented and waved his hand, casting a spell to bring Percy toward him, the man being turned into a light ball and being cradled in Yen Sid’s arms, a little like a cat. “Percival, I don’t know how on earth you did that, considering you had the most important job of all…” he sighed, Percy transforming and giving a wink. “Don’t you worry, master! It’s all done and dusted! I was just having fun, but…” he went red again, “clearly it went a little off-track!” he giggled, Golden chuckling. And then Percy spied something, taking Golden’s hand and leading her to a little store window.
A curtain opened, a little show beginning, and a little group of tiny children popped out of a screen, led by a slightly bigger doll, who waved at everyone cheerily. They all began to sing together in many languages, the biggest doll conducting them and ending in a bright flurry of music magic that turned into snowflakes and rained down on the audience from above, to their delight. “Hehe, thanks for coming everyone! Happy holidays, mele kalikimaka, joyeux noel, feliz navidad!” he grinned, before turning to them properly, the little audience clapping and the boy going a little red, he looked proud, though. “We perform all over the world, we are the World Chorus, so please come see us in the new year!” he finished, before spotting Golden and giving her a big smile as he hopped back in the screen, all the children waving as the curtain closed. “Woah…!” the little girl smiled, Percy chuckling and lifting her onto his back, the group getting ready to meet up at the entrance.
Outside, snow had begun to fall, decorating the town in a sparkling flurry of white that would no doubt reach the workshop, and Yen Sid smiled upon seeing everyone with full bags. “Alright, we’ll split here. Who wants to come with me and who wants to head home?” he offered, Golden tugging at his robes to indicate she was coming with him. Scout and Percy stepped toward him too, Yen Sid looking down at the three boys and the broom that were left, Julius giving a big smile. “Don’t worry master, I’ll keep them out of trouble!” he winked, Yen Sid smiling and nodding. “Good boy. Behave now, maybe you could make me some festive art for my office?” he suggested, all three of them nodding eagerly and joining hands, alongside the broom and bunny children. In a flash, Yen Sid teleported them home, where they scampered about, excited to make the place as pretty as they could. And then from his pocket, Yen Sid pulled out the muse, which he had secretly brought with him. He smiled and whispered where he wanted to go, nobody quite catching the location but Scout suspecting somewhere in the Fairytale Realm, and the gateway opened, revealing a long, dark corridor, leading to an enormous set of spiral stairs.
At home, the boys remembered something they had also been tasked to do, and set about enchanting several papers lying on Yen Sid’s desk, which flew out the window to their respective recipients. After all, this year was special, so they had to invite EVERYONE! The brooms, meanwhile, were borrowing several accessories they’d found in the attic, from silly sunglasses to funny hats, and even wore bold and colourful bow ties, looking particularly snazzy and making the boys howl with laughter at their silliness. As all of them set to decorating, the workshop looked brighter than ever, as garlands, ribbons and wreaths were adorned in every corner.
Up the thousands of stairs they went, before finally reaching the top, finding themselves in a dusty attic which looked as if it had gone unused for a while. Yen Sid approached one of the chests, however, and gave a gentle knock. “Angelique? Are you in here, ma cherie?” he whispered, some tiny ornaments shuffling out from corners and startling Golden. And from inside the chest, a beautiful Christmas Angel awoke, stretching and yawning as she sparkled in the limited light that came from above. Both Scout and Percy were equally amazed, but the little angel gave a warm smile to Yen Sid, who took her into his palms. “Oh, master Yen Sid! It has been far too long!” she beamed, giving him a hug. “Time out, you know her?!” Scout puzzled, scratching her head slightly, and Percy whizzed all around Angelique, to the point she would swat him away. “What…what are you doing?! Get away you silly ball of light, you’ll ruin the halo!” she cringed, before looking back up at Yen Sid as Percy nestled on his shoulder. “This is Angelique. A wonderful singer and decorator alike. We met many, many years ago.” he explained, Angelique nodding. “Why do you visit after so long, old friend? I thought you preferred your Christmases smaller now!” she smiled, Yen Sid giving a slight shrug. “Well, little one, one of MY little ones,” he pointed down at Golden, whose eyes sparkled as she stared at the angel with fascination and awe, “wanted a spectacular Christmas tree, and I believe that’s impossible without you. I trust you to do the job?” he winked, Angelique nodding and giggling as he booped her nose. “Of course! Though I haven’t decorated in a little while, I claim no responsibility for this Baroque atrocity!” she motioned all around to the dusty castle, and then a smile formed. “But…I’m willing to help. We may have a look round and see where my other little friends are hiding.” she chuckled, before two little ornaments, a tree and candy cane, tapped on Golden’s heel, the little girl holding out her hand for them to clamber on.
“Are all the things in this castle alive?” Golden asked, Angelique turning to face her. “But of course not, can you imagine that? Though…there are many of us. Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs Potts, Chip, Plumette…” she trailed off when she noticed how Golden’s eyes shone in delight when she heard about all the magical friends. “Where did you find this one, Yen?” the angel asked the old master, who merely shook his head. “Long story, not explaining it at the present moment, but she’s my youngest apprentice. She loves anything and everything magical.” he smiled. Scout and Percy were behind him, whispering about the evening plans together and giggling, and Yen Sid hoped Golden didn’t catch what they were saying, though the girl was distracted by a noise she heard- a high-pitched little toot. They continued to descend the stairs, a trail of ornaments hopping down with them, and Angelique explained the master and Belle were outside skating, and so would be busy and they would be left alone, if they stayed discreet. Percy couldn’t help but float over to the window to take a peek, though, and chuckled to himself as he watched them skate together- love was such a wonderful thing. He flitted back toward Yen Sid, Angelique finding a storage room and pulling out several garlands and candles, the sorcerer making them float behind in the ever-growing stream of decorations. “Hmm…there will be more in the south area of the castle. Let us go!” Angelique instructed, Yen Sid still holding her in front of him and following her directions, not seeming to notice as another high-pitched, ear-piercing toot emerged from somewhere. Golden frowned and tugged at his robe. “Does anyone hear that? Like a little whine that comes and goes every so often?” she asked, everyone shaking their heads. “No idea. But how about we check it out together?” Scout offered, before Percy flew in front of her. “Hey hey hey, we’re in an enchanted castle! I’m coming with you two. Yen Sid, we won’t be long, just keep the gateway open for us if you find what you need, alright?” Yen Sid nodded and gave the group a smile, heading south and knowing his children would be safer together, whilst Golden heard another little toot and ran west, desperate to know what on earth the noise was.
Back at the workshop, the outside was looking like a beautifully decorated building, with Christmas lights, garlands, and lots of little ribbons. Julius slid down from the large ladder, the brooms keeping it stable for him. The three brothers stood back, admiring their work. They couldn’t wait for Golden to see when the time came. Oswald’s long ears twitched a little as he turned to the brooms with a side eye. “You DID put up the singing decor inside?” he asked slyly. The brooms put their hands up, as if offended that they were being accused. Mickey and Julius laughed, and waved the silly brooms off to excuse them. “They did Ossie,” said Mickey with a giggle. “I made sure they did, about time they listened to me! So, what do ya wanna do now? We could make little paper trees or angels, or maybe…” Julius gave him a wink, and huddled around him and Oswald. “Do you two wanna go search for presents? I know where Yen Sid ALWAYS hides them!” he grinned, before leading them back into the workshop, where the brooms were now sweeping up, one of them drying the dishes and placing them back into the cupboards. Oswald looked at them, and they stared back, he put his fingers to his eyes and then pointed them at them as if to say “I’m watching you.” The brooms gave the gesture back in return despite having no eyes. “Hmm, maybe it’s that rainbow coloured yawn I’ve been asking for.” Julius mused, leading them to large doors to Yen Sid’s bed chambers, where he knew all the presents were surely kept inside his large extended wardrobe. Yen Sid would often enchant it when his number of apprentices grew and he’d have lots more presents for everyone. To their surprise, the chamber doors were open slightly ajar. Julius tilted his head a little, feeling a tad confused as no one had been up here yet, they had been outside. “Huh? Didn’t Yen Sid close the door before we left?” he said in a confused voice. “So how did…?” Oswald’s face suddenly dropped, he rushed past his brothers and burst through the door, and what he expected to find was exactly what he was worried about. The wardrobe door was open, and the presents half opened and scattered on the floor, and over a hundred sheepish looking bunny children who all shrank a little upon seeing their dad suddenly appear in the doorway. “DANG IT!” Oswald cried, grabbing his ears and pulling them down, before pointing a rather annoyed finger to the door, ordering them out of there. “Downstairs, NOW!! Oh my gosh Yen Sid is gonna kill me!” The bunnies all started running past Oswald, some almost knocking him over as they stampeded toward the stairs and back down into the lower quarters, a couple were carrying lumps of coal, while they were confused about such a present, they took it anyway as they might as well escape with some treasure. Oswald slapped a hand over his face as he eyed the mess, Mickey and Julius stood beside him, looking like they were trying not to burst into laughter. “Relax Oswald, we’ll fix this!” Mickey said cheerfully, patting his exasperated brother on the shoulders before holding out his arms, preparing to undo the mess, Julius began to help with the magic too and soon the three brothers were cleaning up. Their magic worked together a little too well in fixing the mess, as all the presents suddenly sparkled and disappeared into nothing, vanishing from the spot. The three boys were suddenly silent. “Umm, was that supposed to happen?!” Julius cried, thinking they made a mistake, Mickey shook his head, certain that they used the correct magic spell to reverse this. “No no, I’m sure…” he said quietly, tapping his chin. “Hmm…might have to explain this to Yen Sid when he gets back…” But their attention was caught to something else, the doorbell. Their faces suddenly lit up with smiles as they raced down the stairs, each hoping to be the first one to answer the door.
At the castle, the group traversed further on; they listened for the sound of the little toot as it echoed off the stone walls, Scout scratched at her head, definitely feeling that she heard this kind of sound before. A flute? No…perhaps a recorder, it wasn’t quite coming to her what the sound was. They stopped at a door, a large ornate one they hadn’t been through yet, Golden gazed in awe at how huge it was. “Oooh!” She said, placing her hands over her cheeks in wonder, wanting to push open the door and see what was inside. “Let’s go in! I wonder what lies ahead…” She put her hands on the door and pushed it, the large doors opening easily to a wide, yet dark room and went on further like a hall. Percy snapped his fingers, knowing how to light the way. “Ahh, this is where I come in!” He beamed, but suddenly the door slammed in front of him, locking him out just as Scout stepped over the threshold. The girls stared in shock as they were locked inside, Golden tried to toggle the door handle, but it was stuck tight, as if padlocked. “What the?! Percy, are you there?” She cried out, knocking the door with her fist, Percy knocked the door back, signalling he was still present. “I’m here!” He cried back, keeping a positive tone to his voice. “It’s okay, you girls go on! I’ll figure out how to get past this pesky door in no time, nothing shall prevent the light man from pursuing the enigmatic sounds!” He could be heard mumbling a little as he began the problem solving process, Scout meanwhile had conjured a small ball of light in her palm as a source of vision for the dark room. “What gives…?” She said softly, a melody sounded at the end of the room, it was low and quite eerie, with Scout immediately recognising it as an organ. She felt Golden take her free hand suddenly, feeling a little spooked by the sudden music. “You hear that too…?” she quivered, Scout nodding and squeezing her hand back gently, they walked on at a slower pace, knowing that anything could pop out at them in this dark room. The deep melody grew louder as they walked further ahead inside the room, coming to stop as a sudden toot made them jump. Golden ducked behind Scout until she noticed something behind a cardboard box, it was a little piccolo, and it was looking at them with both fear and intrigue. “Hello there.” Golden whispered to it, letting go of Scout’s hand “Who are you?” The little piccolo squeaked and made another high toot, hiding back behind the box. Scout smiled and got down on one knee to get a better look at the frightened instrument. “A piccolo! I should have known.” She held out her hand, showing it that she was friendly and could be trusted, the little piccolo leaned forward, looking up at her face and the kind smile she wore. “Are you the one who was making those little sounds?” She asked gently, the piccolo beginning to nod. “Y-yes, yes! That was me. I’m Fife.” He said, giving a friendly toot as he hopped forward, and sat in Scout’s open hand as she brought him over to Golden, who smiled and became fascinated by him, Fife took off his top and bowed to the two girls. “W-what are your names?” He asked them. “I’m Scout!” replied the older girl, lightly patting her chest with her fist. “And this is Golden. She’s my little sister.” Fife was surprised but happy as he clapped his little hands that were in fact his keys. “Oh you two are sisters?” he asked, a small grin on his face. “I’ve never had a brother, or a sister…But I do have a master. He’s a wonderful musician…You must have heard the music, the one playing just now? That was him!” Scout and Golden nodded, the latter now super interested in getting to know Fife and his master, maybe she could find him relatable to her in having someone to look up to; maybe Fife saw a father in this musical master. “We did!” She smiled, her voice now a lot bubblier. “So you have a master too Fife? I do too, but he’s also my papa!” Fife grinned, already finding the little girl with blue and violet coloured hair very adorable. “Aww, really? So, Scout…he’s your papa too?” Scout nodded, her eyes twinkling as she thought of Yen Sid, seeing how much of a dad he’d been for her the past couple of years, especially as her birth father had never been in her life, and now she had two parents with her mum back in the picture. “He is indeed…” She beamed, “And you ought to meet him! Perhaps you know Angelique?” Fife nodded again, looking enthusiastic as he recalled his friend’s name. Scout continued. “Well, as we were searching for the music, your little whistles…we came in here and…the door slammed shut! It was weird…Fife, don’t suppose you know a way outta here?” Fife pointed one of his tiny hands in front of him, giving a cheerful toot. “Yep! I can take the two of you to the exit, I’ll point the way and guide you.”
Scout stood back up, holding Fife in one hand and Golden’s hand in the other. A window with an old, tattered curtain provided a little bit more light, the room now visibly looking dusty and unused for a long time. Golden waved her hand in front of her face as some of the dust got on her nose, almost making her sneeze. She knew the brooms would have a field day cleaning this place. “Mister Fife, do you like music too?” She asked, peering around Scout to look at the little piccolo, who gave his signature little giggle. “I do!” He tooted. “I love music, with all my heart! And when I get better at it, my master said I can have a solo in his opera! Oh, I’d do anything for a solo…” Scout grinned at this, hoping to meet this master knowing now what he specialised in. “So, he’s a composer eh? Well so am I!” She chuckled, Fife giving a little tune in glee as he was more than happy to introduce his master and new friends to each other. “He makes the most beautiful music, and he sings too! He performs with such passion, and grace. I admire him so much!” He hopped off of Scout’s hand, landing with a little clink as he hopped up to the door, indicating it was the exit. He gave them a wide smile as the girls gave him a little wave, solidifying their meeting, farewell and new friendship. “Here’s the door! My master is through here too, I hope you can meet him before you go.” Turning the door handle, Scout opened the door slowly, leading Golden through it and being taken aback that it wasn’t the hallway like before, the same place where Percy had been locked out at. This room was more like a large chamber, and it was much bigger than the previous room. Perhaps Fife had made a mistake? But there was no other door, making the older girl cautious and the littlest feel quite nervous. There was a sudden boom of organ music, sending a chill down their spines and the air filled with green light. “Hmmm…hehehe, there you are.” said a deep voice, it came from above, it was loud and had an air of malice. “The master doesn’t like intruders you know.” Golden jumped behind Scout, clinging onto her hoodie and hiding her face in her own as she spied the large organ above her, it was alive and talking, and as she saw its face, she broke out in a cold sweat. “We-we aren’t trespassing!” Scout protested, eyeing the organ as well, putting an arm protectively over her little sister. “We’re just getting help from a friend, and leaving.” The organ lifted its eyebrow, staring down intensely at the girls, his mouth curling from a frown into a smile. “And yet you’re here.” He purred. “In the West Wing, without prior permission or knowledge from my master…Don’t worry though, I’ll keep it our little secret.”
Unable to gain access through the door, even in his light form, Percy decided to go for plan B and inform the master, bracing the fact that Yen Sid might scold him for getting separated from Scout and Lumen, and Yen Sid may go overprotective mama on her again. It was unlikely, but Percy couldn’t help but think about that and realise how silly his master had been. “Oh Percy, it’ll be fine!” He mused to himself out loud. “This is fine, just an honest mistake that can be sorted.” He stopped suddenly as he turned a corner quickly, zipping up to the top of the hallway as he noticed a candelabra hopping about on the red carpet, and beside it was a walking clock, were they…chatting to each other? Percy lowered himself a little, if he wasn’t in his light form, he would rubbed at his eyes as if seeing an illusion. “I might be off my rocker, but this is a new type of delusional…though, hehe, with a talking angel, anything goes.” He approached the two enchanted objects slowly and timidly, not wanting to accidentally spook them and in turn scare himself. The candelabra turned and his flames enlarged in surprise. “Quoi?! What are you?” He said, the clock beside him quickly putting his hands on his hips and scowling. “You imbecile!” He glared in annoyance. “You know I’m a clock.” The candelabra glared back at him, not liking being told the obvious. “Not YOU, you miserable old miser, THIS! This ball of light!” Percy gently hovered above them, his light sprinkling over them as they watched him with a look of curiosity. “So sorry to bother the both of you, gentlemen.” Percy said kindly. “But have either of you seen Angelique, or my master, Yen Sid?” The candelabra was suddenly overcome with a warm feeling and felt quite romantic, and almost fell over swooning into the clock’s arms. “Angelique…Oh my little beauty…the castle shone so much more brightly when she was the decorator. She’s down from the attic?” Percy’s light twinkled brightly and bobbed up and down in excitement. “Yes! In fact, that’s why we are here.” He chimed to the two. “Yen Sid is enlisting her help to decorate a Christmas tree.” “Marvellous! I am Lumiere, the humble and loyal maitre’d to the master of the castle, and this my associate, Cogsworth!” Cogsworth pushed love-struck Lumiere back up and rolled his eyes, as if this was something the candelabra would often do. “Hmph associate…” The clock scoffed. “I am the castle’s majordomo, but yes yes, I am Cogsworth. Pleasure to meet you dear sir.” Cogsworth held out a hand for a shake, Percy gave a small chuckle, knowing he couldn’t do so in this form. Giving a twirl, the ball of light transformed into a man again, leaving Lumiere and Cogsworth blown away in surprise. “Sacre bleu! How’d you do that?!” gasped Lumiere, his flames almost going out. Percy grinned, adjusting his hat and glasses as he knelt down, helping the two of them up into his hands. “Ah, I suppose I owe you a little explanation.” He said, giving them a little wink. “I’m not like you two, you are enchanted while I was simply using a spell of my own. I can transform into light at will! I guess it's the reason everyone calls me the light man, hahaha!” He chortled, Lumiere and Cogsworth looking with great interest as they were explained to. “Fascinating…!” Said the clock with amazement, wondering if it might be possible for him and the others to one day transform at will.
“So, ma cherie Angelique is helping you decorate?” Lumiere asked, his cheeks glowing as bright as his head and hands. “That’s marvellous! Tell me, what can we do to help?” Cogsworth jolted like a clock striking twelve, quickly shushing his compadre and putting a hand over his mouth. “Ah-ah-ah! The master forbade Christmas!” He barked, looking quite worried while Lumiere looked the complete opposite. “Come now Cogsworth,” He soothed smoothly. “with Belle around I know anything’s possible these days. Now, what can we do for you, fellow feu?” Percy beamed with delight, glad that he asked. He stood up and gave a little jitter, already feeling a new found friendship with the duo. “I am Percy!” He cried joyfully, holding them both a little closer. “A humble and loyal sorcerer AND former apprentice to the mighty Yen Sid! Much like yourself my fiery little fellow! I could do with some assistance you see, two of my friends have become locked in a room by a malfunctioning door over on the west side of the castle and I have to get them out. The master knows the most about lock picking spells…or putting holes in walls…I’m getting the hang of the latter, hehe…But I still need to find him.” Lumiere and Cogsworth glanced at each, believing they knew what had happened, looking a little worried about the current situation as Percy told them. “The west side…?” Cogsworth squeaked. “That’s where the master’s room is! And…oh no, Lumiere!” Lumiere gave a salute and gave a confident turn to the light man. “Not to worry my friends!” He proclaimed. “We shall enlist the rest of the castle staff! Your master Yen Sid shall be found in no time. Plumette!” He put a flame to his lips and whistled, which surprised Percy in how he did that, but magic could make you do anything, so he didn’t think much of this action. Quickly, a small feather duster appeared around the corner, she looked very pretty and had a little maids cap on as well as a graceful smile as she saw Lumiere. “Ah Lumiere my love!” She cried with delight, the candelabra giving her a little wave. “What is it? Is there something wrong, mon amor?” Lumiere’s voice was much softer and more romantic sounding as he spoke to Plumette, hopping down from Percy’s hand and approaching her. “Ma cherie, can you tell the rest of the staff to look out for Angelique with an old sorcerer? We have to find him, c’est imperatif!” Plumette gave a little gasp, before nodding with great enthusiasm for her task ahead. “Ah ah say no more! I shall inform Mrs Potts and the others, tout de suite!”
Yen Sid had found the final box of decorations, ornaments now forming a large trail behind him, it reminded him a lot of a time from his childhood. Though there had been mishaps back then, and a certain someone was a huge snitch, all’s well that ends well, so he held no grudge. He smiled down at Angelique as the last of the ornaments lined up, and took the muse out from his pocket. “Homeward bound then.” he smiled, Angelique nodding and watching in wonder as the gateway opened, reams of music cascading down the edges of the portal. “Are you ready, my little dear?” he giggled, quickly closing the door behind them but leaving the portal open for the others to come through. Angelique gave an enthusiastic nod, “oui, let the decorations fly!” she grinned, waving her hands and leading the troupe.
Tinsel, ornaments, lights, candles, garlands…all of it flourished from every balcony, clambering and cascading through the workshop. Even the halls had been decorated, and Yen Sid took a peek outside, noticing the front looked festive too, thanks to his boys. Speaking of which…he headed to his office for a moment, before noticing the door to his room was slightly ajar, since the corridor from his study led him to his chambers. He gave a slight smirk, wondering if the bunny children were up there, and opened the door. There seemed to be a slight presence of magic, Yen Sid giving a chuckle upon realising what had happened. Those decoy presents always caught the boys’ eye, and he knew there would come a year when they would try to sneak some. Luckily, they were mere lumps of coal, but he hoped they wouldn’t be too upset- the real ones were just with Father Christmas! He turned to see Oswald nervously in the doorway, Yen Sid just giving an understanding smile. “Papa, the bunny children…we didn’t mean-” he flailed, Yen Sid giggling slightly. “Don’t worry. As long as you’re all truly sorry and did your best, I’m sure there’s room on the Nice list for some funny apprentices.” he smiled, reaching down to take off Oswald’s hat so he could give his head a rub, Oswald giving a big grin. Yen Sid even picked him up, which was rare for both of them, but it seemed they were both in high spirits, and those only increased when the two finally went downstairs, and saw the workshop in full, and the guests awaiting them inside.
“Ahh, welcome everyone. Looks like you’re all here.” Yen Sid smiled, walking down the stairs. There was Mickey, sharing a kiss under the mistletoe with Minnie, everyone clapping. Goofy was putting some candy canes and chocolate ornaments on the tree, whilst Donald was all caught up trying to fix the lights, angrily asking them to work amongst the other gibberish he was muttering. Aero stood chatting to Felicity, who was trying to keep Morty and Ferdie from going on a present expedition, after the bunny children explained they only got coal that subsequently disappeared, thus leading to more schemes. Mickey turned upon hearing Yen Sid and gave a huge smile. “Papa! You’re here! And Angelique, your decorating skills are pure magic! You succeed every year, here or in the other areas, and you always amaze us!” he grinned, Angelique turning away a little and smiling shyly. “Oh mon ami, you are far too kind. It’s just what I do, as a decorator…!” she chuckled, Goofy popping his head round from the other side of the tree. “Aww shucks, no need to be modest! I’ll betcha ol’ Lumiere thinks the same thing, ah-hyuck!” he chuckled, Angelique going red at the mention of the candelabra, nearly swooning. “Oh yes…Lumiere…” she giggled, Mickey turning to look at the top of the stairs. “Hmmm, wonder where they all are? You did invite them too, didn’t you, Master?” he asked, Yen Sid smiling. “Of course. Even the staff there deserved a day off, so all of them were allowed to go through the portal, if they so wished. And the others will be along soon too. Perhaps they’ll all come through together.” he smiled, giving Mickey’s ears a rub and making the little mouse chuckle.
Aero came over with a smile, sneaking up behind Yen Sid and giving him a hug, to his pleasant surprise. “Oh Yen Sid I’ve missed you! Merry Christmas!” she beamed, the older sorcerer chuckling and returning the embrace, leaning his head atop hers as he was far taller than her. “Merry Christmas to you too, you’ve certainly come a long way in sorcery.” he smiled, Aero nodding enthusiastically and adjusting her hat. “Wait till I show Golden and the others! In fact, why don’t I go look for her? If they don't all show up in…let’s say 10 minutes?” she offered, Yen Sid giving a nod, though there was a slight twinkle of mischief in his eye. “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt, though we must keep things quiet. So, Angelique, is our tree all ready?” he smiled, the little angel stroking her chin thoughtfully. “Well all of my decorations are there. But it just needs…a star on the top! Does anyone have-?” she asked, before being interrupted by Aero, who gave a chuckle. “Hehe, I do! We couldn’t miss this!” she replied, reaching down into a pouch on her belt, Star popping out, covered in red yarn that made it look like a little christmas tree itself. It shook it off and squeaked happily, flying around and sprinkling stardust on everyone, who stared on in awe and amazement alike. Finally, it reached the top of the tree, glowing brightly and illuminating the entire workshop, everyone clapping as everything lit up, and the brooms turned on the radio, starting an amusing dance for all. Everyone clapped and cheered- looked like the Christmas party had begun!
Meanwhile, the girls stared up at the enormous organ, Golden peeking out from behind Scout. “Who are you…?” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly at the sight of the giant musician. He gave a laugh, turning his head to look down at her with a leery eye. “I am Maestro Forte, court composer. Now, I overheard that you two are trying to spread some Christmas cheer in the area where you’re from, yes?” He smiled, Golden coming out from behind Scout and nodding. “Yes! We have a tree, and presents, and stockings, and food, and tomorrow we get to draw or bake together!” she grinned, listing off everything on her fingers. Forte gave a smile. “Well, I know just the thing to tie it all together. A little music.” he grinned, before green music shot up from his pipes and began to swarm the two apprentices, both girls staring at each other in fear. “Now, you two listen very closely. The master HATES Christmas. If I can keep Christmas and that girl,” he spoke with contempt, hating even saying her name, “BELLE, if I can keep them at bay, I will. And no amount of meddling from any children will stop me!” he yelled, Scout firing back at the green music as it seemed to be targeting her, sending blasts her way. “What does it even have to do with you?!” she demanded, looking up at the organ, who smirked, “We’re trying to spread cheer in our OWN realm. That’s none of your concern, surely? Keep being gloomy as you like!” she retorted, Forte just frowning. “Ah, you misunderstand. As soon as an idea gets into one person’s head, they are compelled to share it.” he hissed, looking down at both of them, Golden blasting the green music as it tried to attack her. “Soon, the castle will be buzzing with thoughts of festivities, garlands, ribbons, wreaths, carols and presents. And then? Those seeds of romance between girl and beast will start to sprout. So…why don’t I just end those thoughts…” he peered down at Golden, who looked at him with contempt, “at their source?” he threatened, green music rearing up around her and causing her to glitch out the way.
“That’s so selfish! You won’t let someone else be happy just because you won’t be the centre of attention? No wonder this place is all doom and gloom.” she retorted, Forte frowning. Her eyes were full of brightness and idealism…it made him furious. He gripped her ankles with the music, causing her to fall and land with a yelp, as the attack was unexpected. He sneered down at them as Scout helped her up, both girls holding on tightly to each other. “Both your thoughts of ‘christmas cheer’ end here!” the organ yelled, before slamming down his keys and a hypnotic melody beginning, both girls falling victim to it in a matter of seconds. The organ chuckled. “And now…let my aria begin,” he grinned.
Plumette reappeared, startling all three as they were engaged in conversation, Lumiere having found the invite floating about and Percy encouraging him to join them. “Mon amour! I saw Mrs Potts and Chip by a portal, it seems the sorcerer went through and left it open!” she explained, Percy giving a nod. So, the master was already home? He grinned and accepted the challenge, he was a master too, and therefore had to live up to the title. Plus, one silly old door couldn’t stop him, he just needed more confidence in himself. He puffed up his chest and encouraged the castle staff to head through to the party, and that he would join them soon. Zipping through the halls, he wondered what could lie behind that door, and if the girls had found their way out yet.
“Now, let me show you my greatest MASTERPIECE!!” The organ shouted triumphantly as the two girls had fallen under his hypnotic music, making them forget about Christmas and the goodness that came with it. Forte laughed like a maniac as terrible images played through the girl’s heads. Golden found herself alone, in a crowded street, with no home and no family to share the holidays, and she crouched, covering her ears to try and block the sound of his laughter and the sound of the buzzing traffic. There was also fire, and injury, though her vision was too blurred with tears to make out what she was seeing, but she knew just how awful it was. Her chest hurt too, like her heart had been struck with hundreds of pin needles and was about to burst from her body. Scout too was alone, in her house she shared with her mum, but her mother was nowhere to be seen. She had left her once again, the forest surrounding the house was decaying, the trees dying and having no sense of life nor any semblance of a Christmas tree. Why was this happening? How could there be so many horrid thoughts going through her mind when she was just about to share a joyous holiday with Golden and the others. Golden…where was she? Despite the frightening scenes before her, Scout remembered Golden, and that this holiday season, she was going to share it with her, and everyone else. “Golden…?” She whispered softly, becoming a little louder as she looked for her. “Golden? Little sis, are you there?” Golden couldn’t move, her face was hidden in her knees, her hands still covering her ears trying to block out the world. She was lost and lonely again, likely to be taken back into the clutches of Andrew. Some holiday she’d be sharing this year… “I don’t…want to go with you…” She whispered in a despaired tone, wanting to rid her mind of these thoughts. A small chime sounded behind her, but she couldn’t make it out and pretty much ignored it. “Goldie…?” The little girl’s eyes slowly peeled open, she knew the sound of Scout’s voice anywhere, but it was probably just another depressing sign of bad things and sadness from the music. “You’re not here…” sighed Golden, wrapping her arms around her legs and curling up. Another chime, it was louder this time, too loud to ignore. “Golden…let’s celebrate Christmas. Together!” There was a presence of warmth beside her, an aura that made her feel like she wasn’t alone. Golden lifted her heavy head, there was the glow of a faint figure in yellow. Golden blinked, she couldn’t make out this shiny silhouette, but it was definitely familiar. Another figure appeared beside them in blue, it was a wolf. It approached Golden, giving her a curious sniff. Golden slowly reached out a shaky hand to touch the wolf’s head, feeling its soft fur. The figure behind it now reached out its own hand, and Golden’s eyes widened suddenly as she remembered who this aura belonged to. “Scout?!” She cried out, getting to her feet quickly and desperately looking around. “Where are you?!” The sparkling yellow figure stepped forward, and began to merge with the wolf, a bright glow, it was enough to make Golden shield her eyes. But when the glow dimmed, she was greeted by a sight that made her heart sing. “Hey little sis, I heard you.” Scout giggled, she looked quite pretty in the light, and the street they were stuck in didn’t seem too scary right now. “You did?” Golden quipped with a small smile, wiping a stray tear from her cheek and taking her older sister’s hands. “I guess, I sent an SOS to you, eh?” Scout nodded, winking at the little one. “Yeah, a message in a bottle!” She grinned, both their resolves no longer broken, and the hypnotic music began to falter. As long as they remembered that underneath it all, Christmas is all about them sharing their love for each other, being there for one another, and celebrating one of the most joyous times of the year, and neither of them had to spend it without the family they held near and dear to their hearts. It’s an expression of their love for one another, a love that won’t fade even as the seasons change.
As they joined hands, Forte looked aghast as the music was starting to lose its effect on them, he played more as his keys slammed down, the music was almost deafening, but against all odds Golden and Scout broke through it. A song cue appeared, the girls punching forward together as it broke the hypnotic spell, the green notes were sent flying back into the pipes of the organ. “THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!” The two girls grinned slyly, once again performing a song cue spell, moving in sync as they created one for each of them, one for Scout and one for Golden. “So you think,” Scout boasted, sweeping and pushing her notes to counter Forte’s rising crescendo. “You might be strong and have powerful music that can influence the mind…” Golden punched forward, following Scout’s lead in sending back several green notes that planned to interfere. “But nothing can change what we feel in our hearts!” Forte scoffed, grimacing at their words and upped the ante with his music playing. The chaos inside the chamber alerted Fife, who peeked nervously inside, and was met with shock at what he saw. He hopped in, and tooted as loudly as he could to get Forte’s attention, his sounds were desperate and pleading. “Master, stop it!!” He yelled, standing between the two girls in battle and the giant, menacing organ. “You weren’t supposed to hurt them! You said…” Forte smirked, gazing down with a cruel grin at the little piccolo, who shrank a little back into his pipe. “I said…” Forte said with a curled lip as he began to chuckle. “I’d give you a solo if you helped, you led them to me Fife, I said I’d let them go free on their merry way! Oh, but you see Fife…” He leered at his little helper, and back at the girls, and felt a rise in strength as Golden’s hands began to falter, furthering Scout to try and hold back the organ music. “I told a little LIE!!” cackled the musician, sending several notes that hit Scout with enough force to knock her back. Fife was horrified, and turned to glare at his master, in the most irate his small form could make. “Little lie huh?” he seethed, his whistle rising along with his voice. “Well you wanna know what I see? A big old WINDBAG!!” Forte’s music spiralled out of the pipes, sheet music flying through the air. The magic green music once again gripped the two girls by their ankles, Golden yelped as she lost her focus to use her song cues, and reached desperately for Scout. A blank sheet of paper flew down, hitting Fife in the face suddenly and surprising him. “You want your solo, Fife?” Sneered the organ mockingly, leering down at the girls and his servant, who’s jaw dropped upon seeing the paper had nothing, it was blank, and he had been fooled all along. “My solo…” He said sadly, before staring up as Forte prepared to end the battle, finishing off his two new friends. Fife covered his eyes, not being able to do anything except duck when the door to the chamber was broken down, and a light wooshed in, illuminating the whole room.
“OI! YOU IDIOTIC PIECE OF METAL!!” Came the angered British scream of the ball of light Scout and Golden knew too well. “GET YOUR OUT-OF-TUNE RUBBISH OFF MY GIRLS BEFORE I SMASH YOU!!” Forte in his rage dropped Scout and Golden, sending them to the ground, Percy swooped in as fast as his light could carry him, grabbing Golden first and then Scout. He lowered himself down, the girls starting to collect themselves as everything around them happened so quickly. The glow of the light ball flickered and spun, transforming back into the man they recognised. “Percy!” Golden cried with joy, with Percy giving her a wink in return. She threw her arms around him tightly in gratitude for coming to her rescue. He helped the girls down and dusted his hands off as he stared up at Forte, a most unamused look on his face. “Now now, no need to thank me JUST yet.” He chuckled, Scout and Golden now lining up beside him. “What do we have here? What are you supposed to be anyway? A Scrooge organ?” He tutted his lips and folded his arms, glaring at Forte the way Yen Sid would glare at them when he wasn’t pleased. “And just before Christmas? Shame on you, you bad organ!” Forte would have fallen on his face with pure annoyance if he wasn’t bolted to the wall. Who was this man yelling at him and telling him off like a naughty child? It didn’t matter, he would be easy to crush, just like Golden and Scout. “Do give me strength…” scorned Forte. “You? A mere human thinks you can do anything against me? You’re nothing but an insect I can crush!” Percy took a step back, a look of disgust on his face. His hands were now balled and resting on his hips. “Insect? Mere human?” He growled. “You don’t know me! I’m a lot more than you see, I’m a former apprentice of the great sorcerer Yen Sid! You won’t win a fight against me easily even if I am smaller, I pack more power into my pinky finger than you do in any of your keys, ya muppet!” Forte’s lip curled, his hollow eyes carried a nasty look at Percy. The girls powered up their magic, ready to step in and back Percy up. “Oh really? You think I don’t know you, Percy?” Forte spoke in a low and mysterious voice, his music notes beginning to rise in preparation to attack. “I know a lot more than you think. How about I give a demonstration?” Percy snapped his fingers at lightning fast speed, a flash of light burst from the tips which quickly dispelled Forte’s music. He refused to let the evil organ get into his head and mentally attack him like he did with the girls, Percy had too much of a joyful heart that extended to his thoughts, effectively preventing any dark or disturbing thought into his mind. “There shall be no more from you!” He shouted, speaking a magical incantation. A light was unleashed, shielding them all from Forte as Percy finished with a clap of his hands, turning toward Golden and Scout and taking their hands into his. “Come on girls! Let’s leave ugly to his devices, Yen Sid is waiting for us!” The three of them chuckled and quickly sprinted to the open door, Percy using one last spell to seal the door that had been broken down.
They ran to the other end of the hall, panting and sweating from running and from the battle. Golden moved to cling to Scout, more than glad to finally escape from there. “Phew…You know what? I think I realised something…” She sighed, Scout looked down at her and petted her brightly coloured hair, Percy approached then and got down to her level, placing a gentle, comforting hand on her arm. “And what’s that, Lumen?” He asked softly, Golden returning his gaze with her face slightly pink and smiling a little. “Well…” She began. “I think, a part of being in this family is that you’ve got to fight for your life before every occasion, right?” The three of them were silent for a moment as they absorbed what Golden just said. Before they all burst into good-natured laughter. Percy stood back up and took Golden’s small hand in his while Scout took the other. They all walked at a slower pace as Percy led them back, to the portal he came through to find them. Golden’s eyes went wide as she spied the portal’s opening, a bright and colourful scene was waiting on the other side. “Well, hehe! Wasn’t that crazy? Definitely quite the Christmas spectacle!” joked Percy, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose, Scout responded with a light snicker. “Ha! Says you.” She said teasingly, they both felt Golden squeeze their hands tightly in hers, holding them close to her in a warm and loving fashion. “I guess…not everyone will be in the Christmas Spirit.” She said, “But, it’s okay…because I’ve got you guys. You two, papa, Mickey, Oswald, Julius, the broomies, and now I’ve got a mama! I think thanks to all of you, I have my Christmas spirit!” She turned to throw herself around Percy with a hug, burying her face into his robes as he chuckled and patted her back, even as a growing sorcerer she still had so much innocence that came with being a child. “Aww, do I say you’re welcome?” Percy giggled, gently rubbing the back of his head and messing up his sideburns a little. “Well, you’re welcome!! I’m glad you’ve got your Christmas spirit, little one! And I’m glad we are the ones to help it flourish. Now, with the phantom of the opera at bay, we best get going…Oh! Did you two figure out what you heard?” Scout almost forgot, and nodded as she began to laugh, feeling silly for forgetting but given the situation it was understandable. “Yes! We did find the source, it’s right here.” She reached into the hood of her jacket, taking something out and holding it in her hands. There was Fife, safe and sound. Golden squeaked with delight when she saw him, and Percy almost burst into a ball of light again. “By Jove!” He cried out, “So it was you all along? So you must play music! Oh, wait…you must know Angelique, surely! Come on, we’re all gonna be late to the par-AHHH I mean haha! Uh, come along!” Fife looked up from Scout’s hands, looking a tad upset, there were small tears in his eyes. “You can leave me here.” He said sadly, staring back down and not wanting to look at Golden. “I tricked you…I don’t deserve to come with you.” Golden felt a twinge of pain in her chest, taking the little instrument into her arms from Scout and hugging him close. “Hey come on, don’t cry!” She cheered sweetly, holding him like a doll. “It’s Christmas Eve, and everyone deserves to have a good festive holiday, and that includes you too!” Fife was a little taken back by her kindness, a tiny smile appearing behind his hands as he leaned into her. “Y-you mean that?” He asked, Golden giving him a nod and a quick pat on the head. “I do indeed Fife! You can join me and my family anytime! You’re one of us!” Percy and Scout winked at each other, and held out their arms for Golden to step into the portal, wanting her to have the first step through. “After you, Lumen.”
Golden took the first step through, being met with the all-too-familiar brass doors of the workshop, and gave a curious look to Percy, who winked. She heard several voices and the clanging of several instruments being tuned, and Scout couldn’t help but chuckle at her anticipation. Percy stooped down and gently gave her a little pat on the head, and then one of his signature grins, rubbing his hands together like a showman. “Alright, are you ready?” he winked, Golden’s eyes shining as she wondered what on earth could be happening, whilst Scout bounced on her heels, as if she could explode with excitement. And then Percy flung open the doors to the workshop, and Golden’s eyes went wide, lighting up in amazement. From floor to ceiling, the huge workshop had been decorated, lights and candles on every balcony, and tinsel round every column. And in the centre was that beautiful tree she’d picked out, adorned with light and bows, ornaments of every shape and size all about. And then she grinned as Star waved from atop it, Golden giving a slightly shy wave back, though it was mainly just her trying to process everything she could see. And then, below, a crowd of everyone she knew! Some of them were chatting, others sharing hugs and kisses under the mistletoe, but then they all turned, and in their loudest voices…
“MERRY CHRISTMAS GOLDEN!”
For a second, the little girl was stunned, before breaking out into the biggest smile any of them had ever seen, eyes sparkling as if they were made of a thousand stars. She rushed down the stairs, Percy having to warn her to be careful, and Scout teleported down, Golden running into the crowd and launching herself at Yen Sid, who caught her and hugged her as tightly as she wished. Star suddenly flew down and tapped her on the nose, which caused her heart to sparkle in her chest, Golden drawing it out for a second and smiling as it sparkled and glimmered brighter than usual, full of spirit and cheer. She looked around the room in wonder- there was Mickey and Minnie chatting together, Oswald and Julius waved at her from the crowd, Ortensia and the bunny children all giving bright smiles, and then she noticed where the tuning noises were coming from. Over to one side, a familiar face…the little orchestra and choir she’d seen earlier, the little leader giving her a bright smile and wave, running over. “Bonjour, Joyeux Noël!! Great to meet you, my name is Jules!” he beamed, Golden tugging on her dad’s robe and subsequently being put down, bending down so she was the same height as the small doll, who gave a smile and polite little bow, which was amusing considering his small size. Nevertheless, he tapped Fife, who gave a grin and followed. And then Golden turned, eyes sparkling, and noticed her best friend weaving through the crowd, running into Aero’s arms. “Aero!! You’re here too, surely this can’t get any better?!” She exclaimed, Aero giving her hair a ruffle and smiling, before everyone turned as Jules raised his arms, giving a smile. “I bet it can! Let’s see what happens~” she giggled, before Yen Sid approached both of them, looking down at Golden warmly. “Golden, sweetheart?” he smiled, the little girl nodding. “Yes, dad?” she replied, Yen Sid gently taking one of her hands in his. “I’m glad we can make this Christmas just as wonderful as the one you dreamed~” he smiled, a twinkle in his eye making Golden gasp. She HAD dreamed of this! She stared up at him in wonder, and he just winked, before Jules motioned for everyone to sing, and Mickey piped up. “As your favourite MC, let the Christmas celebrations begin!!” he grinned, Jules nodding and striking up the band, everyone joining in. “When you wish upon a star…”
After a few more carols and songs, Jules and his band were allowed to mingle, putting their instruments back in their cases and sending them through a handy screen, all dressed in their familiar outfits and mostly going to play with the bunny children, though they had to mind they weren’t stepped on due to how small they were, even smaller than Jules himself! Meanwhile, the little conductor seemed to be searching amongst the crowd, Star noticing and smiling, creating a trail of light for him to follow until he spotted Rouge and Zuri, chattering together about how beautiful and amazing the tree was, Rouge having never seen one of such a grand size in all his life. “Guys! You came!” Jules grinned, running over and embracing both of them, Rouge giggling slightly and going as red as his name, though not quite as red as Jules went upon seeing Zuri. Under the tree lights she practically glowed, so much so that his bowtie flushed alongside his cheeks, Star chuckling and cheekily pulling mistletoe over them, Jules fumbling with his words. “I um…we’re standing…haha…isn’t that funny?” he giggled, Zuri just rolling her eyes. “C’mere you.” she giggled, pulling him behind the tree and earning giggles from Rouge and Star alike, as well as everyone else who was watching.
Meanwhile, Golden and Aero were chattering, that is, until the familiar incessant clanging of Percy’s bell began, Aero looking like she wanted to snap it. She bent down and whispered in Golden’s ear, “maybe a Christmas gift to the world will be to burn that bell!” she giggled, Golden chuckling into her hands and trying to shut up as there was clearly something Percy wished to say. Despite this, a few giggles escaped, Percy raising an eyebrow and smirking at them both. “I can’t tell if you’re laughing at me or the fact Aero’s hat has been askew since we got here.” he retorted, Aero going pink and fixing it, giving him a joking glare, though they both dissolved into laughter after a few moments. Percy cleared his throat and smiled, Yen Sid suddenly appearing from behind a nearby column with a sack, his hat once again transformed into a Santa hat. “Merry Christmas from… Santa Sid!” he smiled, Percy giggling and announcing that there was a Christmas Eve present for them all, but that Santa was sure to visit that night and bring them everything else they may want. The gifts began to float all around the room, Aero being handed one and Golden looking at it in wonder, curious. “What did you get?” she piped up, Aero smiling and opening it, before jokingly putting the star-shaped bow atop Golden’s head, who went a little pink and tried to unstick it. She opened the shiny paper to reveal…a paintbrush! “Woah!! It’s one of those awesome magic brushes! I never got one during my apprenticeship, aaahhh! I love it, I love it!” she squealed, hugging it to her chest and doing a little twirl of excitement, Mickey wandering over. “Oooh! It’s like yours, look Mickey!” she grinned, Mickey nodding and giving a grin. “It really is, would ya look at that! It’s so beautiful Aero, congrats!” he clapped, Aero going a little pink as Golden joined in, but smiled down at them both.
More gifts were afloat, one moving toward Julius, who opened it and squealed with glee- his favourite fish treats! Oswald got a new mug, capable of refilling itself with his favourite coffee, and Mickey got a brand new pair of shoes, adorned with stars and moons, straight out of the Cosmos. And the bunny children, to their delight, didn’t get coal, but instead an assortment of rattles and little mind-bender puzzles to keep them occupied, all of them trading and sharing what they were given. And one of the final gifts floated toward Golden, relatively big so she put it on the floor, crouching down to open it and trying to guess what was inside, though she had no clue. To her surprise, though, Star squeaked and sat down on her head, as if it knew exactly what would happen. Mum approached with a smile, taking a photo and seemed to have a little twinkle in her eye, Golden finally tearing off the paper and opening the gift, where a light began inside, one so bright she closed her eyes tight. That is, until she heard a familiar voice…and felt something hug her shoulder. She opened her eyes, leaning back, and her eyes went bright when she realised just who was in front of her, opening her arms for a proper hug. “STARLIGHT!!” she beamed, the little glowworm rushing into her arms and giving her a tight hug, both of them holding each other as if they would never let go. And then, Starlight dove down into the box and handed Golden her own little gift, a tiny star which floated in her palm, but felt very familiar. It glowed brightly, Star squeaking excitedly and both of them tapping it at once, enveloping Golden in a bright burst of stardust.
“You made a wish once to do magic, and I’m gonna make sure that wish comes truer than true!” Starlight giggled, flicking her wand and everyone gasping in amazement as the stardust cleared, revealing a bright purple dress adorned with stars and music, now in place of Golden’s usual red robe. She beamed at her little star friend, and the two shared yet another hug, Mum actually having to wipe her eyes a little. She knew Starlight from their years spent together, and was glad they both could reunite with the ones they held dearest, whether daughter or closest friend. Sonatina put an arm around Scout, who was unwrapping her own gift, excited to see a brand new hoodie with all sorts of cool musical details- it was designed just like a DJ kit! Yen Sid approached everyone, smiling down at them all, and gently took Golden’s hands in his own, Starlight now settling on her shoulder. “Look at you…all of you! How you’ve grown since I first met you…” he looked as if he could shed a tear, Percy tearing up, though giggling. “You have all grown so much, my little apprentices, and I couldn’t be prouder of all of you. You’re all so, so special…Merry Christmas.” he smiled, giving Golden a little kiss on the head and the boys suddenly crashing into him in their rubberhose version of a hug attack. Scout then joined, and then Golden, Percy…everyone! And Yen Sid was sitting there laughing on the floor for a moment, before looking up in surprise as he spied a familiar, kindly face. “Merry Christmas, little bro.” Ambrose giggled, offering a hand and his own children and wife appearing behind him, Yen Sid chuckling and accepting, the two of them walking off to chat together.
Mickey stared at Starlight in curiosity, who gave him a cute smile and a wave, Mickey reciprocating it. “I haven’t seen ya before, pal! Who are you?” he grinned, Starlight flying over to him and hovering just in front of him, much like Star would. “Well, considering Golden screamed my name to the masses…I’m Starlight! Dream sentry and proud best friend of Goldie!” she giggled, offering one of her hands for shaking. It was very much like a plushie’s, but had a magic quality about it that made Mickey’s eyes light up, like he was shaking hands with a star! He chuckled slightly and everyone set to introducing themselves, Golden telling all sorts of stories about when she was young and they went on adventures all around the house, everything would go from normal to crazy in a matter of seconds thanks to dream magic! Meanwhile, Yen Sid and Ambrose headed to his office for a moment to chat, Ambrose spying something on Yen Sid’s table and giving a nostalgic smile. “You still have yours, too.” he whispered, picking up the photo of the three of them in the past, Yen Sid nodding. “I do. I treasure it.” he replied, giving Ambrose a warm smile in reply. Both of them stared down at the old photo, Ambrose holding it to his heart for a moment, and then turning to Yen Sid. “I hope he has an amazing Christmas too.” he whispered, Yen Sid touching his shoulder and nodding. “I hope it’s the brightest one yet.” he answered, the two gazing out of the window for a moment together, before giggling like boys as they spotted a sleigh streaking across the sky. Even now, they still loved this holiday, perhaps as equally as the children they raised.
Heading back down, they noticed Golden conversing with Coral and Caspian, Brooke minding them, and giving a sweet smile to Ambrose, who watched as the children played together, the three of them trying to count every ornament on the tree. They turned, though, and noticed someone under the mistletoe- Fanny Cottontail, who was giving a slightly shy eye toward Julius. Mum gave a little giggle. “Oh look everyone, I think someone wants a kiss…” she chuckled, Julius going a bit red as they both anticipated the moment, though they were both too shy to take the first move! Starlight and Star giggled, before moving behind both of them and giving them a little push, so that they kissed! Julius nearly fell over in surprise, but then took Fanny’s hand, both of them red as tomatoes but glowing with happiness, Star and Starlight high-fiving. “Aww gosh! I told you they’d be cute!” Mickey giggled, nudging Oswald, who rolled his eyes. “You were right Mick, looks like a new romance has blossomed, great way to start the year!” he chuckled, Julius giving them both a bit of side eye but also giggling, though his eyes had turned into hearts and he was feeling rather smitten. “Guys…..I kissed Fanny!!” he broke out into a blush, both boys chuckling and supporting him as he swooned. Scout raised her glass. “Merry Christmas one and all!!” she crowed, everyone raising their glasses too, except Golden as it was bad luck with water, so instead she just pretended, Aero giggling at her antics. “MERRY CHRISTMAS!”
Percy clapped his hands together, several dishes appearing from the kitchen, and smiled. “Anyone up for pudding?” he offered, Rouge and Cogsworth both dashing forward. “ME! ME!! With custard!” they grinned, Percy laughing as they clambered up toward the dishes, who stooped down to give them both some. Percy was then startled by a tap on the shoulder, the brooms appearing with a wrapped parcel with his name on it, much to his surprise. Though, he then had a bit of a sly smile of his own, drawing out seven little packages of his own from his pockets, trading with the group. Each broom received a brand new, shining brush cap in each colour of the rainbow, both to differentiate them and also make them look far more polished, as their own had been wearing off. They all tightly hugged Percy, who chuckled and laughed as one of them tickled him, before they all sat beside him as he opened their gift to him, a rug shaped like a star that they’d painstakingly made together. His eyes brimmed with happy tears, and now he was the one squeezing them, actually lifting all seven of them off the ground and shaking them side to side in his joy, causing them to stumble around afterwards as if drunk, making everyone laugh.
After a night of fun, games, and plenty more carols, many people began to disperse, though a few were staying the night, such as Ambrose or Minnie. Jules’s face was covered in kisses, the boy sleepily but giddily holding Zuri and sweeping her up in a little dance as his baton played music, the rest of the World Chorus kids hopping back through a screen and falling asleep on the other side. Rouge followed suit, waving a friendly goodbye to Cogsworth, and Angelique and Fife had fallen asleep leaning against each other, Yen Sid briefly returning to the castle to tuck them all in. The brooms were sleeping under the tree, all curled up like little babies, and Coral and Caspian had fallen asleep counting, getting to about three hundred ornaments before Brooke tucked them in on the sofa, curling up alongside them and Ambrose chuckling at his little family. The boys scampered upstairs, though both Oswald and Mickey planned to stay up to see if they could see Santa, and Scout and Sonatina had fallen asleep on an armchair, Scout looking much like a child as her cap flopped down over her eyes. And creeping about, quiet as a mouse, were Golden and Percy, who were looking for the perfect library book to read before bed. Finally, they made their choice, and after getting all cosy, Golden curled up in bed as Percy began to read to her, telling her and Starlight the tale of ‘The Nutcracker’.
Morning rose on a quiet Symphonus house, that was until… “PRESENTS!!” Oswald cried, dragging his brothers out of bed, while Scout awoke Golden and Aero, Yen Sid and Percy already up and awaiting them. Coral and Caspian also sprung off the sofa, excited to see what Santa had brought them. As piles of presents around the tree for each apprentice were revealed, Yen Sid noticed one for him, and stared in surprise at what it was. A brand new quill. He couldn’t help but wonder…but chastised himself for thinking silly things, and instead watched his apprentices open their gifts, beginning with Julius. Tearing into his gift and removing lots of layers of wrapping paper, Julius’s eyes widened with joy as he saw the rainbow coloured yarn sat in his lap, the one he had always wanted! He got off the sofa and began batting it around and purring, making everyone snicker and appreciate the moment of Julius at play, until Star swooped down and became entangled up in the yarn, looking like a starry, sparkly rainbow. “Hey!” Julius protested, trying to reach for his yarn again from Star. “That’s mine, Star!” The little star squeaked and giggled as it became more tangled in the yarn threads, the scene looking more and more amusing. Yen Sid watched the scene in amusement as he passed the next present to Oswald, who rubbed his palms together in excitement as he took the large boxed present from his master. Ripping the paper with ease, Oswald gasped in delight and almost jumped on the sofa with glee. It was a huge dragon figure, a limited edition he couldn’t find anywhere, and was a little too expensive for him to get usually. “YES!!” He yelled, thumping his huge feet in excitement. “Thank you Santa!! Just the one I needed for my collection!” Scout looked over at the dragon figure in the box, admiring how beautiful it was. “Wow, that’s cool Oswald!” She smiled, patting Oswald on the back as he continued to gush over his present. “I think the bunny children want a closer look too.” Oswald gazed over the box as several of his small children began clambering up beside him and up his shoulders and onto his head in any attempt to get closer to his present, despite Oswald holding his limited edition close so it wouldn't slip from his hand, he did know how to handle his kids when they were being rowdy. “Okay okay, settle down kiddos!” He chuckled, as Yen Sid reached down to pick up another present, this one for Mickey, the wrapping paper was covered in lots of little planets.Taking the present, Mickey couldn’t help but shake it first in his excitement, making Yen Sid smile behind his hand. “Open it Mickey.” He said gleefully. “Then you can find out sooner.” Mickey giggled and started pulling off the paper, slightly neater than Julius and Oswald, and a little bit slower. Once he was inside, he couldn’t help but gasp as he saw what his present was, a small, pink and fluffy little baby fox with a magnifying glass in her paw. “Linabell?!” Mickey gasped in surprise, taking her out of the box and giving her a big hug, nuzzling her face against hers. He noticed in the box there was a little accessory, a purple flower. He picked it up and neatly put it around her ear, making her look even prettier than before. “Welcome to the family, Linabell! I’m sure you’ll fit right in with Duffy and his friends!” Everyone couldn’t help but find the scene to be incredibly adorable the way Mickey was talking to his little stuffie, especially Aero and Golden, they even swore they saw the little fox move and nuzzle Mickey back, it might have been a trick of the light, or perhaps it was a different kind of magic?
Scout tore into her gift, revealing a brand new, shining composition box, an advanced type of composition spell that could hold multiple songs at once. She’d filled up her last one, so this was the perfect replacement, and she instantly began to tamper with it, before noticing something underneath, a smaller parcel with a note attached. Nobody knew who it was from, so she opened it up, revealing a necklace with charms that looked like discs or records, putting it on and grinning, and opening up the note. ‘Dear Scout, I saw this and thought of you! Mixing with you and showing you all my kit the other day was the best, so I hope we can hang out again soon. - Tyke.’ Scout looked down in wonder, before grinning ear to ear, glad to make a friend and excited to learn all about modern music from the DJ she admired. Aero smiled at her enthusiasm, before tearing into her own present. It was a custom-made cloak, one much like the fairy godmother’s, but purple and blue instead of the regular colours, making her smile. It was adorned with all sorts of stars and constellations that glimmered in the light, much like a star chart, and sparkles that twinkled all over, Star giving an excited and happy squeak upon seeing it, and burrowing into the hood much like it would for Asha. And just as hoped, it fit Aero perfectly!
Coral and Caspian opened their gifts together, Ambrose sharing a little smile with Yen Sid, who couldn’t help but chuckle at their enthusiasm. They loved getting gifts- Ambrose always got them things when he went travelling, and this time they’d been given some puppets, the two slipping them onto their hands and starting a game together. “I’ll take your bread and your cakes, muahahaha!” Caspian called, Coral shaking her head and giggling as she popped to the other side of the tree, the two almost tripping over the other presents lying about until Ambrose calmed them, encouraging them to play but calmly. Percy found a few gifts of his own, opening them to reveal a new outfit, modelled much like a prince, but full of stars and planets, the man squealing with glee and instantly rushing up to his room to try them on, coming downstairs looking like royalty, making Yen Sid chuckle, but feeling glad his son adored the gift. And finally, Golden opened one of her gifts, what she saw made her feel very curious at first, it was a frame. A blank frame at first, but after a few seconds of staring at it, her picture appeared. She smiled widely, but her smile got even bigger when Yen Sid appeared behind her, and then Oswald, Mickey, Julius, Scout, Percy, even Mum was there! And Starlight, perched upon her shoulder, as well as Aero, who held Star in her hands. “Oh my goodness, this is incredible! I love it!” She beamed with utter joy, hugging the photo to her heart. Yen Sid grinned softly, approaching Golden and looking intently at the photo with her. “Do you know what the most magical thing about this is?” He asked, a playful look on his face, indicating he had involvement with enchanting it. “What? What is it, papa?” Golden asked in a cheery yet curious voice. Yen Sid could have beamed as he answered her. “Every time you find someone new in your life, a close friend or a new member of your family, they will appear in this photo.” He explained proudly yet gently. “So everytime your family grows, so will the photo, and I know you’ll meet plenty of wonderful people, my little lunula.”
After opening many more presents, Julius was playing with a brand new little robot he’d been gifted, one that looked like it was from the Press, and Oswald and Mickey were engaged in a tough debate regarding if Linabell or the dragon would win a battle. Caspian and Coral had some brand new clothes and were rambling to Ambrose and Brooke all about them, and Percy was testing out a brand new rhythm game he’d been given for his Xbox. Starlight and Star even got gifts- Starlight had been given a cosy white blanket, much like the one Golden had as a small child, and Star had a cute little crocheted cape, adorned with galaxies and stars. As everyone played with their own toys or chatted, Yen Sid went about preparing dinner with the ingredients provided, all while the brooms were excitedly showing off their brand new brush caps, sparkling and shining as they watched Percy play, even without eyes. Some of them could even copy the hand motions he was making, Mum and Scout laughing at their antics. Golden was mumbling to herself as she played with some of the miniature figures she’d been given, sitting under the tree, and eventually dinner came, everyone eating their fill of turkey, vegetables and roast potatoes, along with more dessert than they could even comprehend! The afternoon was then spent watching some of the boys’ old movies and listening to Scout’s Christmas playlist, a few dancing and the brooms doing a little show they’d prepared, and when night came around, Ambrose told them stories by the fire, tales of when he and Yen Sid were boys and how they spent Christmas. He couldn’t tell them everything, but he told them how they tried to make cookies, how they would sneak off to the realms to learn how they celebrated, and how they’d spent their evenings in taverns, meeting fellow students from all sorts of other mentors. Ambrose even mentioned something about Yen Sid having a crush, but refused to elaborate, though he giggled a little when his brother turned pink.
Finally, it was time for Ambrose and his family to depart, though he offered for any of the children to come and play with their cousins anytime, everyone excited to see little Coral and Caspian again soon. Brooke and Sonatina had become friendly, too, and were looking forward to baking together. And as always, Yen Sid and Ambrose gave each other a warm hug, and promised to meet up more. The Symphonus family got into their pyjamas, Sonatina heading back to her own home for the night but Scout planning to visit her soon, and everyone knowing they were always welcome. Percy headed to bed, tired out after playing games all day, and the boys had all fallen asleep on the sofa watching even more movies. Scout went to go journal the night away, and Yen Sid found his littlest on her own in the observatory, tiredly watching the stars go by, Starlight and Star flying by as they enjoyed the night sky, Aero alongside them and giving her a wave through the enormous window. She blinked sleepily, yawning, and Yen Sid picked her up, the two watching as the Wishing Star lit up the sky, Golden putting her hands together and remembering the wish rhyme Starlight had taught her when she was only little, truly glad to have her little friend back. And then, she drifted off to sleep in her dad’s arms, who chuckled, watching the stars go by above and eventually taking everyone to bed. “Merry Christmas, starshine.” he whispered, turning off the light in her room and heading to bed, though not before stopping by his office and staring at the photo and portrait one more time, wishing both a merry christmas though they weren’t here to celebrate.
The Christmas cheer was still in high spirits after boxing day, and with New Years coming up gave them more chances to celebrate. One morning, Percy was instructing the broom to sweep in patterns based on their colour coordination, not realising Yen Sid had come down stairs from his study with a fresh mug of tea. “Master! There you are!” Smiled Percy, gently pushing a green broom between the yellow and the blue. “You’ve been in your office study all morning and evening last night! What gives?” Yen Sid gave a soft, fatherly look at Percy, taking a small sip of his coffee as he put an arm around him. “I’ve just been having a lot to think of, that’s all.” He mused, looking back to Christmas Day during the party, seeing old and new faces. Part of him wished he’d relive that for another day. “It’s been quite some time since a Christmas party wasn’t last thrown together, wasn’t it?” Percy paused for a moment and thought, indeed it was true, and it was all for Golden to celebrate for the first time, as the previous Christmasses had been quiet little get-togethers since Golden had been so young, as told by Yen Sid. “Lumen looked very happy didn’t she?” Percy said with a chuckle. “I’m glad I was there to spend it with her! Now if only…” Percy seemed to trail off, with Yen Sid thinking out loud again, his face seemingly becoming a little melancholy. “If only they’d last forever. Who knows how many Christmasses we will have together? I just hope it’s many.” He placed his mug down, no longer in the mood to drink, and left Percy alone with the brooms once again. Percy was left a little dumbstruck, what had gotten into his master? He thought he ought to go ask him, but then it hit him. Yen Sid must have been thinking of the past, and how things didn’t quite last when he was a boy, and that a certain something was missing during the holidays in his later years. Percy couldn’t help but feel quite sorry for him, it was never pleasant seeing his master this way. Two of the brooms tugged at Percy’s sleeves, as if asking him if he was going to let this stand or if he was going to do anything about it, a scowl appeared on the light man’s face, and he stood up, his chest puffed out and shoulders high. “No way, I’m NOT letting the master be sad!” He boomed, as if he was the broom’s commanding officer. “On this day, I shall commence Operation Cheer Up Yen Sid! But I can’t do it alone my little friends! I’ll need some back up…now where are those other apprentices?” He marched through the house, finding Oswald and Mickey battling it out on Roblox, focused hard on the game with headphones on, Percy startled them as he gently pulled them off. “Do you mind?” Oswald frowned, trying to reach for his headphones until Percy placed them on the stool beside them. “I apologise for interrupting boys, but I have a serious task at hand!” He explained, fidgeting a little in his excitement. “Before we begin, where is Scout, Julius and Golden?” The two boys looked at Percy with a hint of confusion, then again Percy had always been quite eccentric. Mickey pointed to the hallway of rooms up stairs. “I think the girls are trying out Scout’s new kit in her room.” He said smiling. “And Julius might be taking a cat nap, if he is make sure to wake him gently, wontcha? He gets spooked easily.” Percy nodded, adjusting his tall hat as he went to collect the others. “I will see to it that Yen Sid laughs by the end of the day or I will eat this hat! In front of the brooms!”
Percy headed down the hall to Julius’s room, where he was softly snoozing, snuggling his ball of yarn and Star close. Percy couldn’t help but take a picture for his album, before gently poking the cat, who sighed and gently jabbed at the air, as if to say ‘go away, I want more sleep’. Percy gave a gentle giggle and gently shook him, Julius opening his eyes and stretching, Star waking in surprise and turning over, all tuckered out from spending the night in the air with Aero and Starlight. Come to think of it, Aero hadn’t got up either, Percy giggling to himself at the idea of her snoozing the day away, but he doubted she’d thank him if he woke her, so instead he just let her be. He informed Julius of his plan, the sleepy cat stretching and trying to come up with something, meanwhile Percy zoomed down a flight of stairs to Scout’s room, where Golden was borrowing her headphones and enjoying the music coming from the composition box, an amazing track Scout had come up with and had been working on the past few days. Scout gave a cheery wave as Percy entered, Golden enthusiastically putting the headphones on the ball of light so he could hear, Percy having a momentary jam session before remembering the goal at hand and passing them back to Scout, who cleared the kit away as Golden slid off the bed and the two were informed of the mission, everyone excitedly preparing their best ideas or thinking hard as to how they could make Yen Sid laugh. Percy turned to them all and shushed them, pointing up at Yen Sid on one of the higher floors, who was pacing and didn’t seem to notice the gathering of brooms and apprentices in the workshop, who were all forming a plan. Mickey raised his hand to go first, rushing up the stairs, and caught Yen Sid heading toward his room, calling out for his master with a smile.
“Hey, hey, Yen Sid!!” he called, Yen Sid turning and giving a slight smile upon seeing Mickey rushing toward him. “I heard you coming.” he replied, gently righting Mickey’s hat as it had flopped and fixing his robe, which was a little long at the sleeves for him. “Hey, did you know I broke my record today?” he grinned, Yen Sid raising an eyebrow. “Record?” he mused, Mickey nodding enthusiastically, causing his hat to once again fall forward and require fixing by Yen Sid. “Yep! My record of how quickly I can finish my chores! I did them ALL in an hour today!” he cheered, Yen Sid giving an impressed smirk. “Really? Well that’s excellent news. Your speed and endurance are clearly increasing, important traits for a future master.” he winked, Mickey giving a gleeful chuckle. Yen Sid then had a bit of a twinkle in his eye, remembering doing the same thing as a child, but more importantly, WHY. He stooped down to Mickey’s level, looking into his eyes with a mischievous look. “You’re not planning anything mischievous, are you?” he smirked, Mickey giving a slight giggle but shaking his head. “Me? Haha, nah! Just thought I’d let you know!” he replied, Yen Sid standing and giving a slight smile. “Well, good on you lad. I’m proud of you.” he said, popping the hat off Mickey’s head so he could ruffle it and give him an ear rub, before replacing it with a smile. “If you keep it up, I may reward you.” he winked, Mickey’s face lighting up at the idea. “Reward, really?!” he exclaimed, Yen Sid giving a playful nod, before walking off in search of a book from his room. Mickey snapped his fingers, heading back downstairs. “Ha! Close enough. Who’s next?” he grinned, everyone impressed at the attempt.
Scout jumped to her feet, putting her hand up and volunteering, everyone looking forward to it. “Enjoy losing, boys!” she smirked, Mickey giving her a slight smirk as they watched her teleport upstairs, where Yen Sid had found his book and was taking it to his office to study, Scout intercepting him. “Hey pops, check this out!” she grinned, summoning an array of music magic that Yen Sid looked at with an interested eye, recognizing the spell. He opened a page of the book obediently, Scout grinning and making all the words float off the page and make different sounds, turning words into notes. Amused, Yen Sid raised an eyebrow. “Clever trick…you must’ve been taught that by a good teacher, yes?” he spoke, the slightest glimmer of a smile on his face due to his own joke. Scout beamed nonetheless and ended the spell, all the words floating back into place and Yen Sid closing the book with a snap, continuing to head to his office. Scout teleported down, and stared at Mickey’s smug smirk. “Shoot, so close! Comedy and the old man don’t always work together.” she admitted, before bopping Mickey on the head as he continued his ‘look’. She turned to see who would go next, and was surprised to see Julius pulling out several small balls and one big one, everyone wondering where this was going.
“Hey dad! Dad!” Julius called out, standing behind the old wizard, who turned around and away from his readings at the table, which had potion beakers and pages scattered about on it, unusually messy for Yen Sid. “And just what are you planning, little one?” Yen Sid asked with a smirk, Julius began positioning the large ball steady, and climbed on top it with the smaller balls tucked under his arm. He stood on the ball with one foot and began to jungle the small ones, balancing quite well as Yen Sid watched in curiosity. “See dad? I’ve been practising!” Julius boasted, keeping his eyes on each of the smaller balls and trying not to throw off his focus, the other apprentices didn’t know what to think, aside from very confused thoughts. Yen Sid was now completely facing Julius, tilting his head to the left with one eyebrow raised, he tried to find the appropriate words for Julius’s little act. “Well Julius, this is…new?” Julius grinned, if he kept it up any longer he was sure to get even a giggle or a chortle out of the master. “Just you wait, dad!” He cheered happily. “When I’ve practised more, I’ll be a magician AND a juggler! Then you’ll all be so sur-woah ahh, AHHH!!! YIKES!!” Julius quickly lost his balance as he put all his attention into talking, falling backwards off the ball and landing on his rear with a loud thump, the balls bouncing all over the study. The apprentices all either cringed or covered their eyes, Yen Sid however had quickly rushed to Julius’s side, wanting to see if he was alright. “Julius!” He cried, sounding very much like a concerned parent. “That was quite a tumble, are you alright?!” Julius got to his feet slowly with Yen Sid’s assistance, rubbing at his back and turning red in the cheeks at his failed attempt. “Yeah, I’m fine…oww…” He looked a little upset, which worried Yen Sid a bit. He began to pet Julius’s head, making the little cat purr and nuzzle against the flat of his palm. “Don’t fret, it was just an accident.” He told him, giving Julius a warm smile. “If you aren’t hurt, it’s all alright. However…” He stood up, magically lifting the balls with a silent command and gathering them, bringing them back over to Julius. “You should be a little more careful, okay little one? Perhaps you should practise a little more, if that is what you wish to do?” Julius grinned with slight embarrassment, he hadn’t meant for it to escalate to this! He shook his head gently, holding out his paws to take the balls back. “Hehe, actually dad, maaaaybe juggling isn’t my strong point!” He said quickly, his cheeks still standing out with red on his cheeks. “Maybe I’ll stick to sorcery like you.” Yen Sid gave a nod of approval, before moving to focus once again on his books, taking out several scrolls from the shelves. Julius went back to the group standing by the doorway, watching as Julius threw all the bouncy balls back into the little cabinet chest where he found them. “Shucks! I thought that would work!” He moaned, crossing his arms and looking quite angry and upset still, Mickey tried to offer his brother some comfort by going over to him and patting him on the shoulders. “It was a good try, Julius.” He smiled reassuringly, turning to everyone else with the same wide eyed look. “We’ve all done pretty well in fact! One of us is bound to work.” Julius gave a little grin of gratitude at Mickey’s words, it wasn’t a terrible attempt at getting Yen Sid to crack up. With three down, it was now down to either Golden, Oswald or Percy, with the latter stepping forward wondering who would be next, he was secretly hoping it would be him. “Right then munchkins! Who’s next? Anyone want to go?” Golden shyly raised her hand, surprising her siblings as she had been a little quiet about taking a turn. “I’ll give it a go!” She said, managing a small grin. “I think I’m pretty good at getting dad to laugh, I just gotta use my improv skills!”
She put on a rather serious face as she marched into the study, watching as Yen Sid began to sit down, a rather large red book in his hands. Golden saw an opportunity here, and quickly rushed to his side and climbed up onto his knee. “Hey dad?” She said, surprising Yen Sid slightly, but he was nonetheless happy to see his little daughter on his lap in a cheery mood. “Yes? What can papa do for you, darling?” He asked her, parting a few hairs from her eyes, looking intently into them as they shone in the candlelight. “Um, well I…” She tried to find her voice at the correct moment, hoping to catch him off guard. He still looked at her with a patient expression, making her feel more comfortable and not too awkward. “I just…wanted to say…what I came in for was, to say…I LOVE YOU! Hehehe! You know? Cause I uhh…don’t say it often?” She looked away, biting her lip and feeling a bit like a dolt. Whether this made Yen Sid laugh or not didn’t matter, she wanted to hide her face in her hoodie for a good hour. Instead of a laugh, Yen Sid pulled her into a hug, stroking her hair and making her feel warm and cosy. It was enough to make the little girl quickly hug her papa back. “I love you too, little starshine.” He spoke gently to her, “And I don’t mind how often you say it or not, I know you love me, like I love you. Always have, always will.” Golden felt her heart become aglow with warmth, entwining her fingers in her dad’s beard like she used to when she was smaller. Though the attempt hadn’t worked, it still was a sweet sight for all the apprentices who were peering round the doorway watching them, the boys whispering ‘awww’ at them with Scout playfully elbowing Percy in the ribs as he welled up. Looking at the book, Golden couldn’t help but take an interest in it, she made a grab for it and it was very heavy in her small hands. “I’ve read this book!” She giggled. “It has so much information, there’s plenty in here about the world of magic!” Yen Sid couldn’t help but smile at her, a little intrigued by her interest in the book, given how it was quite advanced and wordy despite her age, but she was quite mature and already had a big thirst for knowledge, much like he did as a boy. Her comment made him feel quite happy and enlightened. “Well, if you’re interested,” He said, stroking her hair. “There’s plenty more encyclopaedias in the workshop, and dare I say hundreds in the library. Feel free to pick any you want to read, child. I’d love to hear what you think and what you have learned.” Golden gave a big smile, and one last hug before hopping down off of his lap and scampering back to the group, she felt quite good despite her attempt not working out either. “Well, you can’t blame a girl for trying right?” She grinned, Julius shrugging and Mickey nodding, bringing her back into the circle. “Good try Golden!” Said Scout, clapping her hands ardently for her sister. Golden looked a little sheepish, not thinking she did too badly. “Aww well, he didn’t really smile. But thanks Scout.” She sighed, scratching at her cheek shyly. “Aww Goldie, it was fine!” Mickey chuckled softly, bringing out his fist for Golden to bump hers with. “We’ll just keep trying, there’s gotta be something that’ll work.”
Oswald moved to the middle, cracking his knuckles with a brash grin, boasting a highly confident pose to the apprentices. “Looks like it’s my turn then!” He smirked, before stopping to think of what he could do in turn, he didn’t have a complete plan in mind though he wasn’t about to give up before he started. He tapped his foot earnestly, while tapping at his chin in a look of deep thought. “Hmmm, now let's see…What can I use?” Percy chuckled with great amusement at Oswald, bending over a little to whisper to him. “I hope you’ve got a good line up, Oswald!” It was as if by magic that Oswald knew exactly what he’d do, and gasped softly before turning to Percy and grabbing his hand and shaking it vigorously, surprising Percy by the sheer strength Oswald had in his grip. “That’s it Percy! A line up!” He beamed, “I know just the thing, yes! Watch and learn sibs, a true comedian tells stories that are based on true ones.” Stepping into the study, Oswald noticed Yen Sid was now reorganising his books by magic, not even so much as watching where they would be placed, supposedly down to doing this over and over again during his many years. Oswald marched up to him, clearing his throat to warm himself up and get his master’s attention. “Yes Oswald?” Yen Sid asked as he noticed his little rabbit apprentice come in, wondering with slight amusement at what his next apprentice will have in the way of something silly to show or tell him. “Yen Sid! You are not gonna believe what happened the other day!” Oswald began, already starting to giggle as he recounted the story. “So, Ortensia and I were at home, feeding our little bunnies of joy some porridge for breakfast, and one of them actually leaned forward, grabbed a bowl and poured it all over herself! She was a mess, but still cute! I said to her ‘Oh, you’ve spilt the porridge you silly bunny!’ To which she replied, hehehe in that sassy little voice ‘I AM the porridge!’” After finishing his story, Oswald clutched at his sides and laughed hysterically, unable to steady himself and almost falling forward as he slapped his knee in unbridled exhilaration. He was still laughing after about five minutes, wiping a tear of joy from his eyes as he began to calm down. “Hahaha, ahh kids! They drive you crazy but you can’t help but love ‘em, am I right?” Yen Sid raised an eyebrow, a small but visible smirk on his face, Oswald believed he might have achieved the goal! Untucking his hands from his sleeves, Yen Sid lowered down on one knee to be at Oswald’s height. “Indeed Oswald.” He said. “I have several children of my very own I can relate to in your case, and in mine, you are one of those children that drive ol’ Yen Sid completely bonkers.” He playfully gave Oswald a gentle boop on the nose, making the rabbit squeak and grin with a blush. He stood back up, turning to his books and vials. Not even a titter, Oswald was not pleased his true story had not gotten any sort of delightful response from Yen Sid, he thought hard again, the bunny children were always causing so many shenanigans that made up some of the funniest times he spent with them, so what else…bingo. “Oh! That’s not all!” He continued, the giggles in him already coming out. “We were at the park one day, me, Mickey, Pluto and the bunnies; Mickey had thrown a frisbee for Pluto to catch, and the bunny children saw it and ran after it while I was holding onto their harness! I was dragged all over the park as they tried to find it! I was all like, stop the ride! I wanna get off!! Hahahaha! It sure was crazy, but thinking back on it now, it was hilarious!” To Oswald’s absolute displeasure, Yen Sid had not been listening the entire time, and had his attention completely on looking through his bookcase, going up and down the sections. Oswald’s jaw could have dropped, but instead he puffed up like a balloon and lightly kicked Yen Sid’s shin. “Hey!! Did you even hear a word I said? You weren’t paying attention!!” Yen Sid flinched slightly as he received a kick, not realising Oswald had still been talking to him. He straightened up and cleared his throat slightly. “Ah, oh! I’m so sorry Oswald.” He apologised quickly. “I was preoccupied, I’m missing something from my bookcase, you see…a photo album to be exact. I wonder…wait, I think I remember now…!” And with that, he left the room in a hurry to find his missing album. Oswald gave an irritated grunt and stomped his foot. He was more than certain his takes would get Yen Sid to laugh, he crossed his arms in a grumpy fashion as the other apprentices entered the study behind him. “Hey, don’t feel bad Os, I thought your stories were funny!” Mickey said cheerfully, giggling as he thought about the scenarios of the stories in his mind again. “Haha! Especially that last one!”
Julius purred up close to his brothers, giving Oswald a playful punch on the arm and winking. “And hey, at least it wasn’t my circus act!” He chuckled, looking a tad embarrassed again. “That was a total disaster…hehe!” There was a sudden cackle behind the apprentices, each of them turning to see Percy smirking and rubbing his hands in delight. “Oh ho ho this can only mean one thing!” Scout scowled slightly in suspicion at his comment. “Hmm, and what is that?” She asked, noticing Percy giving her a slight side eye expression. “Well…I win!!” There was a sudden silence that followed, that was cut by the sound of another grunt from Oswald. “Huh? Whaddya mean you win?!” He yelled, Percy merely smirked again, and adjusted his hat and glasses as he pulled out a small satchel that matched the stars and moon pattern that adorned his tall hat. He looked inside it and let out a small chuckle, walking past the other apprentices as they watched with great curiosity at him. “Well I was the one that put you all to the task of making the master laugh and you hadn’t, and I guess that means that, by default I won the bet.” He hadn’t mentioned anything about a bet, leaving the apprentices even more confused than before. “What bet?” Julius questioned, waving his hands about, trying to make sense of the light man. “You didn’t make a bet! In fact you haven’t done anything!” Scout moved to gently rub Julius on the head, moving between him and Percy and holding her other hand up, trying to lighten the situation. “Time out boys, it’s not a contest.” She said in a pacified voice, looking back at Percy with a sneaky wink. “But if you’re sure you’ve won Percy, why not show us? After all, you are full of surprises.” Percy raised an eyebrow at the younger sorcerer, smirking as he noticed her winking at him. “Very well, I shall! Oh and here’s my bet: If I don’t manage to make him laugh, I’ll buy you all ice cream cake, just for all of you!” The apprentices were intrigued by that, especially Golden and Mickey, free ice cream cake all day is nothing to sneeze at. “BUT…” Percy went on, sticking up his index finger in a very serious tone. “If I win and make him laugh, you guys all owe me ice cream cake, got it?” Golden’s shoulders sank and Mickey and Julius almost fell to the floor to their knees. “Awww whaaaat?!” They all cried in disappointment, Oswald’s ears looked like they were about to fly off like rockets. “Alright, fine!” Scout said with an eye roll, crossing her arms with interest in Percy’s plan. “And if you lose you’ve also gotta eat your hat!” Mickey snickered, winking at Golden, who was now feeling more hopeful that Yen Sid wouldn’t laugh. “Ahh I was hoping you forgot that…” Percy moaned. “Nevertheless! Here I go, watch and learn…”
Percy walked into the study, where Yen Sid was now sitting at his usual chair, a photo album opened in front of him. He had a soft, reminiscing expression as the memory of the Christmas party fluttered inside the page. He gave Percy a soft smile as he gazed up at him upon entering. “Hello master,” Percy chimed, “I have something to show you. You might remember it?” He reached for his satchel, and opened it onto the table, several little thimbles fell out and went to make a line, they were they same ones he had back at his home in Nocturne, he kept them with him for a specific reason, and Yen Sid knew what it was. “Oh Percy…this was a bet we made, wasn’t it?” He said in astonishment, rising from his chair slightly, as all the thimbles began floating in small patterns and movements, and singing a charming little tune. “It was back when you were just a boy! I told you the day I laugh out loud will be the day thimbles sing…And yet, here we are!” He watched the thimbles dance and sing, it was rather silly but enjoyable all at once, Yen Sid couldn’t take his eyes off them! A chuckle escaped his lips as they curled into a smile, then a louder chuckle, and finally he collapsed in full blown bouts of continuous laughter, having to bend over on the table just to keep himself upright, an arm held over his stomach as he wheezed. Percy himself was now in a fit of laughter too, he had done it, he had won the bet but even better he had made Yen Sid laugh! He jumped into the air, his light form appearing here and there in flickers as he became incredibly giddy and excitable. “I WON!! I TOLD YOU!!” He cackled, turning to face the apprentices behind by the door, who were all completely awestruck at Yen Sid laughing his head off, and that Percy managed to achieve it. “YOU ALL OWE ME ICE CREAM CAKE! ESPECIALLY YOU MASTER!!” Everyone else entered the study room, Golden and the boys were a tad disappointed they lost, but at least Yen Sid was laughing, and it was surprisingly contagious. Scout humbly admitted defeat and smiled, she did say Percy always had a surprise up his sleeve. “Heeeey…” A rather sleepy voice came, everyone turned to see a rather sleepy Aero, with Star on top of her head still sound asleep. Starlight was in Aero’s hand, looking a little dazed. “What's all the noise?” Aero asked groggily, rubbing at her eyes. “Oh, why is Yen Sid laughing?! That’s what I heard?!” She stared at the apprentices who all wore expressions of amusement, unable to hide their joy any longer which only created more questions in Aero’s head. “No WAY did that just happen!” Oswald cried, absolutely astounded. “That’s so genius!” Mickey smiled broadly, his little eyes sparkling. “Can you show us how you do that?” Scout gave an approval to that. “Yeah!” She cried, “I wanna do that! Gosh, I’ve never heard him like that before, like ever!”
Yen Sid was now standing up straight, still laughing as he wiped his eyes of tears that were streaming down his face. “Hahahaaa! Oh my word…” He guffawed, nearly slipping back down into his chair. “Well, I can hahaa! I can honestly say, I’ve been defeated!! Well done Percy my boy, you’ve done well for yourself after making that bed all those years ago!!” Percy grew even more giddy than usual, he always adored hearing his master praise him, and for this. He once again flickered with light as he laughed triumphantly in the presence of Yen Sid, Aero and the apprentices, who all applauded him. “Thank you, thank you!” Percy said, giving a bow. “I’m here all week! Haha I feel so good, positively bursting!! After all this time, I finally managed the spell of musical thimbles and made you laugh! You see everyone? What did I tell you? Of course I’d be the one to win the bet.” Yen Sid stiffened as he stopped laughing, putting together everything that had happened earlier and smirked at Percy. “Wait a minute…” He grinned, “Percy, were you the one who put them up to all those hijinks earlier?” Percy looked shocked, or at least pretended to as he placed a hand over his chest. “ME?! I’m aghast!” He expressed loudly, “Of COURSE it was I! And now the kiddos here all owe me ice cream cake!” Aero was so lost as she watched the scenes unfold before her, she saw Golden staring at her with her hand up trying to hide a giggle. “Hijinks? Ice Cream cake?” Aero slurred, now finally awake and realising what time it was. “What did I miss?!” Julius furrowed his eyes slightly as he stared at Percy, with his hands on his hips. “Apparently we had to try and make Yen Sid laugh,” He explained, “we couldn't, but Percy has managed to, as part of a bet. Since he won he gets ice cream cake…” Percy nodded, a rather smug look on his face as he imagined all the cake, awaiting him later. “Yup, and a heaping bowl if you please!” He ordered playfully. “After all, as the one who got to make old Yen Sid laugh, I think it’s only fair that I deserve only the biggest and most delicious serving of-” His boasting was cut off immediately by a cry from Golden as she pointed a finger at Percy, leading a charge with the others. “TICKLE HIM!!” She shouted, if Percy had time to think he’d be out of there. “WHAT?!” He was suddenly pounced on by the apprentices, sending him backwards onto the nearby sofa and started tickling him all together, making their beloved light man laugh out loud hysterically as he tried to wriggle free. “If we can’t make Yen Sid laugh,” giggled Golden, “we’ll make YOU laugh instead!!” Aero clasped her hands over her mouth, watching gleefully as the tickle fight commerced, Percy’s loud, yet wonderful laughter filling the room. Star woke to the commotion, and immediately joined the apprentices in their attack. “Don’t you dahahahare!! Ahhahahaha knock it off you bra-AHAHA!!” Percy flailed and wheezed as he tried to make his escape, but with everyone on top of him made it rather difficult. “I won fair and hahahaha and square hahahahaha! Get ohohohoff!! HELP YEN SID!!!” Yen Sid however was also enjoying the scene before him, snickering as he took a cheeky photo on his phone, thinking he’d send it to Ambrose and the council later for a quick chuckle for them all. He then went to try and pry off the apprentices from their little tickling attack, starting with Oswald, Golden and Mickey. “Okay okay, that’s enough.” He chuckled warmly, “Let’s let him get up and breathe. Aero, care to lend a hand?” His other graduate giggled and gave a nod. “Sure!” She said as she lifted Julius and Star up, and Scout followed her lead by helping a very giggly and dishevelled Percy to his feet again. “Oh, that does it…” He panted, his cheeks glowing as red as Mickey and Golden’s crimson robes. “I am…SO getting you all back for this!” Yen Sid laughed again, going to pat Percy on the shoulder good-naturedly. “You know, you did encourage them.” He joked, Percy giving him a roll and a side eyed look. “But you know, it has made me smile. In fact, you’ve all made me smile today.” Everyone all shared a delighted grin and even laughed themselves at this fact, with Golden bouncing up and down as she was told so. “It did? You really mean it?” She asked him, Yen Sid responded by ruffling her hair playfully and fatherly. “Indeed it did, child. Indeed it did. Although I don’t often say, each and every one of you makes me happy, and I’m so incredibly proud of you all.” He took Golden’s hand in his, leading everyone else to the door and out to the town, where a certain dessert was promised. “Right then, I think it’s time we all went and had our dinner, and just as a treat, we’ll all have ice cream cake just this one time.” Scout ran ahead of him, going toward the edge of the town toward the forest. “I’ll get Mum!” She cried, waving at them all in a hurry. “Don’t wait up!” Following her, a ball of light zipped past, already several steps ahead of everyone, who weren’t up to racing on this fine, beautiful late afternoon. “I call dibs on the ice cream cake!!” Percy shouted, his light leaving a trail down the path toward the town.
Elsewhere, in a room full of tapestries and paintings, a veiled girl alighted some candles and bowed her head. The walls were decorated with carvings of events to come, some created by her own hand, others foretold millenia ago. Mirai gazed at each of them in turn, closing her eyes and trying to tap into it, as each of her eyes closed in turn, sending her into that familiar state between conscious and unconscious. Though it was not always possible on command, being in a quiet chamber and surrounded by past vignettes always helped. Find that sparkle, that glimmer of the future that she could grasp and interpret once it was clear enough. She focused, taking a deep breath, and there it was, a tiny fragment of the future, slowly becoming bigger, glassy like the surface of a mirror, but vague, as if viewed from underwater. She clenched her fists. Focus, Mirai. Her eyes began to burn slightly from the candle smoke, or lack of concentration, she couldn’t quite tell. She tried one final time, to get a clearer picture of what she was seeing, and eventually, it became a little easier to see. A cockroach…which then shifted and changed, becoming a man. That familiar flash of red clothing, and then the same familiar scenes, the light that faded in the shadows, the moon waning, and then disappearing altogether. The blooming of flowers in red and pink, the thorns, and then the bright, burning light she’d come to hate- she never could see beyond. It was a marker of the foretellers for a reason. They never quite made it past the moment when everything glowed brightly, as if something was blocking them, but their guesses in the past had varied, anything from a pyre to a heart on fire. And yet, all of it was indiscernible.
Mirai opened her eyes, the ones all over her clothes snapping open at the same time, and she heard footsteps approaching, quickly sketching the bare bones of what she’d seen before standing to greet her visitor, giving him her usual warm look. “You’re back. I knew you would be.” she smiled, continuing her sketches. He took them from her, a slight chuckle escaping him. “These are beautiful as usual. Danger becomes beautiful when you see it.” he smiled, Mirai giving a slightly bashful look. “I just depict things as I see them. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Though I hate that light at the end, I cannot deny it is dazzling.” she replied, taking back her sketches and continuing to work on them, and offered her guest a seat beside her on a nearby chair. The two of them gazed at the portraits they were surrounded by for a moment, before Mirai turned solemn, as she usually did in his presence. “The time is not yet here, if that is what you wish to know. Though…I do believe I saw someone who may be of assistance.” She offered, giving a slightly amused look as the guest sat forward in intrigue. “A man…though he had the appearance of a roach. I wonder if he was enchanted?” she mused, before explaining the surrounding scenery in detail, alleys and bright lights, already assuming the guest knew exactly where she meant. Nonetheless, she continued to draw, and tore the depiction of the roach-man away, handing it to him for his use. And then he departed, Mirai left to muse. She didn’t tell him everything, and wouldn’t, for it made little sense to give all the answers. She worked in the shadows, under the veil of grey, and preferred to be vague for her own sake. If everyone knew of her gift, they would use her, but here, in the Church of Foretellers, she was safe. And she only awaited the day her future-sight would come in useful, perhaps for the final time, and when that burning heart would finally come to pass. But until then, she’d light her candles and close her eyes, slipping back away into the space between, and figure out what it all could mean.
